Why do my cruise control and lane assist keep switching themselves off?
Why these systems refuse to engage in rain, fog and low sun, the windscreen replacement that quietly breaks them, and what a false emergency braking event actually means.

Short answer
Almost all of these depend on a camera behind the windscreen and a radar behind the grille or badge. Anything that blocks either — rain, spray, fog, snow, salt, a covered badge, low sun into the lens — makes the car disable the function and say so. That is designed behaviour and returns when conditions do. What is not normal is a system that stopped permanently after a windscreen replacement or front-end repair — that almost always means the camera was never recalibrated.
Adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and blind spot monitoring look like separate features and mostly are not. On the majority of cars they share two sensors: a forward-facing camera mounted high on the windscreen behind the mirror, and a radar module behind the front grille or the manufacturer's badge. Some add corner radars in the rear bumper for blind spot and cross-traffic alerts. Once you know that, the fault patterns become obvious — everything front-facing failing at once points at one of two sensors, and one thing failing alone points at that thing.

- Read the message the car is giving you.Modern cars distinguish between temporary unavailability and a fault. "Sensor blocked", "Limited visibility" or "Temporarily unavailable" is the car declining to use a sensor it cannot trust. A fault symbol with a service message is different and means the codes need reading.
- Clean the windscreen in front of the camera.The camera sits in the wiper-swept area behind the mirror, and it depends on that patch of glass being clear. A film of traffic grime, a smeared wiper, hard water spots or the residue from a windscreen coating all degrade it. Clean the inside of the glass there too — it fogs and films.
- Clean the front badge and grille area.The radar usually sits behind the badge or in the lower grille. Snow, packed ice, mud, dead insects and even a thick coat of wax over the badge can attenuate it. In winter this is the single most common cause of adaptive cruise refusing to engage.
- Consider anything you have added to the front of the car.A number plate mounted over the radar, a bug screen, a light bar, a front-mounted bike rack, a badge cover, a metallic sticker or an aftermarket grille can all block or reflect the radar. If it stopped working right after you fitted something, that is your answer.
- Accept that weather disables them legitimately.Heavy rain, spray from lorries, thick fog, falling snow and low sun straight into the camera all cause temporary shutdown. Lane keeping also needs visible lane markings, so it will do nothing on a worn rural road, on a temporary contraflow, or where markings are covered by standing water.
- Check whether a windscreen has been replaced.This is the important one. A camera behind a new windscreen must be recalibrated with manufacturer procedures — either statically against a target board or dynamically on a drive, depending on the car. Skipped calibration is common, and it leaves systems either disabled or, worse, acting on a mis-aimed camera. Ask the glass company directly whether calibration was carried out, and keep the paperwork.
- Do the same after front-end work or alignment.A bumper repair, a radar module disturbed, a suspension change or a wheel alignment can all require recalibration, because the sensors are aimed relative to the car's thrust line. A reputable body shop will tell you; not all do.
- Take a false emergency braking event seriously.A car that brakes hard at a bridge shadow, a road sign, a parked car on a bend or a manhole cover has a sensor giving it bad data — very often a mis-aimed camera. Switch the system off if the car allows it, and get it diagnosed, because it is a hazard to the traffic behind you.
Common mistakes
- Letting a windscreen be replaced without asking about calibration — The camera is aimed relative to the glass and the car. An uncalibrated camera either disables the systems, which you notice, or aims slightly wrong, which you do not — until the car brakes at the wrong moment.
- Trusting adaptive cruise to see a stationary vehicle — Radar systems are optimised to track moving objects and many explicitly do not reliably detect stationary ones at speed. This is stated in the handbook of nearly every car that has it, and it is the scenario in which these systems most often fail to intervene.
If it doesn't work
Adaptive cruise unavailable in every rain shower
Cause: Radar attenuated by water and spray — Fix: Normal. It returns when conditions clear. If it now happens in light rain when it did not before, clean the badge and grille thoroughly.
Everything front-facing stopped working after a new windscreen
Cause: Camera not recalibrated — Fix: Go back to the glass company. Calibration is a required part of the job on cars that need it, and it is usually covered by the original quote or the insurer.
Lane assist works on the motorway, never on country roads
Cause: It needs clear lane markings on both sides — Fix: Designed behaviour. Most systems need markings, adequate speed and reasonable visibility, and quietly disengage without them.
Emergency braking triggered for no reason
Cause: Mis-aimed camera or radar, or a genuine false positive from a strong reflector — Fix: Have it diagnosed promptly. Ask specifically whether the car has had a windscreen or front-end repair, and whether calibration was recorded.
Blind spot monitoring dead on one side only
Cause: A corner radar in the rear bumper, blocked, damaged or disconnected — Fix: Often follows a minor rear bumper scuff or a car wash. A single-side failure points straight at that module.
Systems disabled with a low battery warning
Cause: Assistance functions shut down when system voltage falls — Fix: Have the battery tested. Modern cars shed features in a priority order as voltage drops, and driver assistance goes early.
Questions people ask
Does a windscreen replacement always need calibration?
On any car with a forward-facing camera behind the screen, yes — and that is most cars built in the last decade. The method is manufacturer-specific and may be static, dynamic or both. Ask before the work, and ask for the calibration certificate afterwards.
Can I turn these systems off permanently?
It varies. Many cars let you disable lane keeping and speed warnings, but reset to on at every start because of the type approval they were sold under. Automatic emergency braking usually cannot be disabled permanently and should not be.
Why does my car keep reading the wrong speed limit?
Traffic sign recognition reads signs with the camera and, on many cars, blends that with map data. It misreads lorry speed limit stickers, signs on side roads, and temporary limits, and map data goes out of date. Treat it as an aid and read the actual signs.
