A cooker hood sits above the hob and catches a plume that is already rising, which is the direction steam wants to go. A venting hob pulls the plume sideways and down through a slot in the hob surface, which fights buoyancy but removes the canopy entirely. The venting hob wins on islands and on sightlines, and costs considerably more.

The two do the same job from opposite directions, and neither is simply better. A hood works with the physics and is cheap and effective; a venting hob works against it and buys back the headroom, the sightline and the awkward ducting an island hood demands.   1. Understand the direction of capture.Steam and cooking vapour rise because they are hot. A hood catches that rising plume in a canopy above. A venting hob draws it sideways into a slot between or behind the zones and down through a duct in the cabinetry. It has to overcome buoyancy to do it, which is why the fan works harder.

Recognise where the venting hob genuinely wins.An island with no wall to mount a hood on, a room where a canopy would block a view or a low ceiling, and any layout where ducting up and across a ceiling would be a major job. In those cases the venting hob solves a real problem rather than a cosmetic one.
  3. Recognise where the hood wins.Against a wall with a short duct route, on any budget, and where tall stockpots are common — a tall pan blocks the sideways path to a downdraught slot but sits happily under a canopy. A good wall hood is also cheaper to replace when it fails.
  4. Check what the venting hob needs beneath it.The motor and duct run through the base unit and often through the plinth or the floor. That usually means losing a drawer, and it means the cabinetry has to be planned around it. Retrofitting one into an existing kitchen is rarely straightforward.

  • If you cook with tall stockpots regularly, note that a venting hob's capture path is at hob level. A tall pan on the front zone can shield the slot from the pan behind it.
  • A venting hob concentrates two things — the hob and the extraction — into one appliance, so a failure of either takes both out of service. That is a real consideration on something this expensive.
  • Some venting hobs allow the extraction module to be serviced or replaced separately from the hob. Worth confirming before buying.

Does a venting hob extract as well as a hood?

For a pan on the zone next to the slot, yes. For a tall pan, a pan on the far zone, or a heavy rolling boil, a well-sized canopy above generally captures more, because it is working with the plume rather than against it.

Can I retrofit a venting hob?

Sometimes, but the base unit and often the floor or plinth need to accommodate the duct and motor. It is a kitchen alteration rather than an appliance swap and should be priced as one.

Are they noisier?
