How do I connect old equipment to a modern TV?

Short answer

Modern televisions have dropped the old analogue sockets, so you need a powered converter box that matches the source: composite in, or component in, or SCART in — they are not interchangeable. A passive cable-only adapter cannot work, because these are analogue signals that must be genuinely converted. Buy one that explicitly supports 576-line PAL at 50Hz, or British and European equipment will roll or go black.

Video recorders, early DVD players, camcorders and consoles up to the mid-2000s all output analogue video, in one of several incompatible formats. A television made in the last decade usually has none of those sockets, and where a socket survives it is often a single shared minijack needing a manufacturer-specific breakout lead. The job is therefore conversion, and the conversion has to be the right one.

Step by step

  1. Identify what the old equipment actually outputs.SCART is the large flat rectangular plug with one chamfered corner. Composite is a single yellow round RCA plug, with red and white for sound. Component is three round plugs coloured green, blue and red, plus red and white for sound. RF coaxial is the round threaded aerial connector.
  2. Use the best output the equipment offers.In rising order of quality: RF coaxial, composite, S-video, SCART, component. If a DVD player has both composite and component, use component — the difference is clearly visible even after conversion.
  3. Check the television for a surviving analogue input first.Some sets keep a single 3.5mm socket that accepts composite through a supplied adapter lead. If yours has one and you still have the lead, you can skip the converter entirely.
  4. Buy a converter that matches the source, and takes power.Composite-to-HDMI and component-to-HDMI are different products and will not accept each other's signals. Any converter needs a power supply, usually USB — one that claims to work as a bare cable cannot do the job.
  5. Confirm it supports PAL at 50Hz.This is the specific trap for British and European equipment. Cheap converters are often built for the American 480-line 60Hz standard only, and a PAL source into one of those gives a rolling, black or juddering picture. It should be stated in the specification.
  6. Wire it up and select the right input.Old equipment into the converter, HDMI cable from the converter to the television, power to the converter, then switch the television to that HDMI input. Turn the source on before the television if the picture does not appear.
  7. Handle sound separately if the converter does not carry it.Most composite and component converters take the red and white audio in alongside the video and output it over HDMI. If yours does not, the sound will need to reach the television or a soundbar by another route.
  8. Set the television's picture mode for the input.Old material is low resolution and looks its best with sharpness turned down and noise reduction turned up slightly — the opposite of what suits modern content. Set it on that input only.

Tips

  • A picture that looks soft and slightly noisy is the correct result. The detail was never recorded; a modern screen simply makes its absence obvious.
  • If the goal is to keep home videos rather than to keep the machine, capture the tapes to files once and put the equipment away. Tape degrades and the machines are getting harder to replace.
  • Old consoles designed for tube televisions will show more input delay on a flat panel. Game mode on the set reduces it as much as anything can.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a passive plug adapter — There is no wiring arrangement that turns an analogue signal into a digital one. It needs a powered circuit to convert it, and the cable-shaped products sold for this do not work in that direction.
  • Ignoring the PAL or NTSC specification — It is the single most common reason a converter arrives, is wired correctly, and produces a rolling or black picture with British equipment.

If it doesn't work

Black screen or no signal

Cause: Wrong input selected, converter unpowered, or source not switched on first — Fix: Check the converter's own indicator light, then power the source on before the television, then step through the inputs.

Picture rolls or flickers in black and white

Cause: A PAL source into a converter that only handles NTSC — Fix: Replace the converter with one that states PAL 576i 50Hz support. No setting will work around it.

Picture but no sound

Cause: The red and white audio leads are not connected, or the converter passes video only — Fix: Connect the audio leads into the converter's audio inputs. If it has none, route the sound separately to a soundbar or amplifier.

The picture is stretched or squashed

Cause: A 4:3 source being shown on a 16:9 panel — Fix: Change the television's aspect or picture size setting for that input to 4:3 or original rather than a zoom or wide mode.

Questions people ask

Is SCART or component better?

Component is generally better for progressive-scan DVD, and a good RGB SCART connection is close behind and much better than composite. Whichever you use, the quality ceiling is set by the source.

Can I use the aerial socket for an old video recorder?

You can, using its RF output and tuning the television to it, but it is the worst-looking option of all and modern tuners often will not lock onto it reliably. Use composite or better if the machine offers it.

Will a converter improve the picture?

No. It changes the signal into a form the television accepts. Some include a scaler that makes the image fill the screen more cleanly, but no detail is added because none was recorded.
