How do I tell what a cable is just by looking at it?

Identifying the common connectors by shape, and the more important point that two identical-looking cables can do completely different jobs.

Short answer

The shape tells you what it will plug into and almost nothing about what it can do. USB-C in particular is only a shape: two identical cables can differ in charging power, data speed and whether they carry video at all. Where it matters, look for a printed watt or speed rating, keep the cable that came with each device, and label anything you know is good.

A drawer of black cables all ending in the same small oval plug is a modern household problem that did not exist when every device had its own shaped connector. The move to one connector removed the guesswork about fit and replaced it with invisible differences in capability, which is why swapping cables is now the single most useful diagnostic step in a lot of device faults.

The cable and port shapes, and what each can do

Step by step

  1. Learn the five shapes worth recognising.USB-A, the familiar rectangle that goes in one way up. USB-C, the small oval that fits either way. Micro-USB, the small trapezoid on older accessories. HDMI, the wide flat plug with angled corners, for video. And the round barrel plug found on laptop and equipment power supplies.
  2. Accept that USB-C is a shape, not a capability.One USB-C cable may be charge-only at low power; another may carry enough power for a laptop; another may carry high-speed data; another may carry a video signal to a monitor. They look the same and are frequently sold with no marking at all.
  3. Look for a lightning symbol on a USB-C plug.That indicates Thunderbolt, which uses the same shape and carries the highest data and display capability. The symbol is also printed beside the matching port on a laptop.
  4. Read whatever is printed on the cable or the plug.Better cables carry a wattage figure, a speed figure, or a certification logo moulded into the connector shell. Anything printed there is worth trusting more than the shape.
  5. Assume a bundled cable is the minimum.A cable supplied with a small accessory — a set of earphones, a battery pack, a light — is very often charge-only and carries no data whatever. This is the classic reason a phone plugged into a computer charges but never appears.
  6. Test capability rather than guessing at it.If a device charges but does not appear on the computer, the cable is the first suspect. If a monitor over USB-C shows nothing, likewise. Swap in the cable that came with a laptop charger and see whether the symptom moves.
  7. Keep length in mind.Long cables lose signal and power. A three-metre USB-C cable is much more likely to fail at high-speed data or video than a short one, and a very long HDMI cable may need to be an active type to work reliably.
  8. Label the good ones and throw the mystery ones away.A small tag or a wrap of coloured tape on the cables you know carry power and video saves the whole diagnostic sequence next time. Unlabelled unknowns are worth less than the drawer space.

Tips

  • Charging cables for phones and small devices are consumables. The fault is very often a cable that has been bent at the plug hundreds of times, and it usually shows as intermittent charging before it fails completely.
  • A USB-A to USB-C cable can never carry the highest power or the display signals, because the A end cannot. If a laptop needs high-power charging, both ends have to be C.
  • Adapters that change the shape do not change the capability. A USB-C to HDMI adapter only works if the port it is plugged into supports video output in the first place.

Common mistakes

  • Buying the cheapest unbranded charging cable in bulk — Charging is where a bad cable is genuinely unsafe rather than merely disappointing, because it carries real current. Cables from a known brand with a stated rating are worth the difference.
  • Blaming the device before swapping the cable — Cables fail far more often than ports and boards do, and swapping one takes ten seconds. It should be the first test in almost every charging or connection fault.

If it doesn't work

Phone charges from the computer but does not appear on it

Cause: A charge-only cable with no data wires — Fix: Use the cable that came with the phone, or one explicitly sold as a data cable.

A monitor connected over USB-C shows nothing

Cause: Either the cable does not carry video, or the port does not output it — Fix: Try a cable rated for video first, then a different port on the laptop — often only some ports carry display signals.

A laptop charges very slowly over USB-C

Cause: A cable or charger rated for far less power than the laptop draws — Fix: Check the wattage marked on the charger and use a cable rated to carry it. Both ends have to be capable.

A cable works only at a certain angle

Cause: Broken conductors at the plug from repeated bending — Fix: Replace it. This is a failing cable, and continuing to use it stresses the socket in the device, which is a much more expensive thing to repair.

Is there any way to tell a good USB-C cable by looking?

Only from what is printed on it. Thickness and a well-moulded connector are weak hints, but a stated wattage or speed, or a certification mark, is the only real evidence.

Can a bad cable damage a device?

A poorly made charging cable or charger can, because it handles real power. Data cables that are simply cheap will underperform rather than cause harm.

Do I need different cables for charging and for data?

Not necessarily — a good cable does both. The problem is that many cheap ones do only one, and they are indistinguishable by eye.
