How do I choose a freezer for a garage or outbuilding?

Standard freezers stop working properly in a cold garage, and the reason is a thermostat that reads the room rather than the food. Climate class and a garage rating are what fix it.

Short answer

Look for a garage-rated model, or a climate class of SN or SN-T, which allows operation down to +10°C. A standard N-class freezer in an unheated garage in winter stops running, the temperature rises above -18°C, and nothing warns you. Also check the socket, the RCD protection and the humidity.

The failure here is counter-intuitive and it costs people a freezer full of food every winter. A freezer thermostat senses the cabinet temperature and switches the compressor on when it rises. In a cold garage the cabinet stays cold enough to satisfy the thermostat for long periods, so the compressor rarely runs — and without it running, the freezer compartment drifts up towards the ambient temperature rather than being held at -18°C. The freezer looks fine and the food is spoiling.

Safety

A freezer in an outbuilding must be plugged into a proper fixed socket on a circuit protected by an RCD — never an extension lead run from the house, and never a lead through a doorway or window. If there is no suitable socket, installing one in a garage or outbuilding is fixed electrical work and notifiable in many cases; use an electrician.

Step by step

  1. Understand the climate classes and pick from them.SN covers ambient +10 to +32°C, N covers +16 to +32°C, ST covers +16 to +38°C and T covers +16 to +43°C. Most kitchen appliances are N or SN-T. For an unheated space you want SN as a minimum, and the class is printed on the rating plate inside the cabinet.
  2. Prefer an explicitly garage-rated or garage-safe model if the space gets genuinely cold.These have a low-ambient heater or a modified control strategy and are typically rated to operate down to around -15°C ambient. Climate class alone does not cover a garage that goes below +10°C, and many UK garages do.
  3. Measure the actual temperature range in the space over a year.A cheap min-max thermometer left in the garage for twelve months tells you more than any assumption. An attached, insulated garage may never drop below 8°C; a detached single-skin one will go below freezing.
  4. Favour a chest freezer for an outbuilding.Better insulated, cheaper to run, and dramatically better at holding temperature if the power fails — which matters more somewhere you visit once a week rather than a room you walk through daily.
  5. Check the electrical supply properly.A dedicated socket on an RCD-protected circuit. Not an extension lead, not a lead trailing under a door, not a garden extension reel. If the garage has no suitable circuit, that is an electrician's job and worth doing properly for an appliance that runs continuously and unattended.
  6. Think about humidity and corrosion.Garages are damp. Condensation forms on a cold cabinet and on the compressor, and over years that corrodes the casing and the condenser. Standing the appliance clear of the wall, on a dry base rather than directly on a damp concrete floor, extends its life considerably.
  7. Fit an alarm or a monitoring thermometer.A wireless freezer alarm or a simple min-max thermometer you check weekly. A freezer in a garage can be warm for a week before anyone notices, and the whole point of the exercise is the food inside it.
  8. Check ventilation clearances even in a cold space.The condenser still needs to reject heat. The usual clearances apply — a gap behind, clear air at the top, and nothing stacked against the sides or on top of it.
  9. Consider security and access.An unlocked garage with a full freezer in it is a target, and a freezer positioned so the lid cannot fully open because of a bike or a workbench will not get used. Both are worth solving before delivery day.

Tips

  • Rats and mice are attracted to the warmth of a running compressor in winter. Keep the space clear behind the appliance so it can be inspected, and do not store food packaging near it.
  • A freezer alarm with a remote sensor and a display kept in the house is the single best purchase to go with a garage freezer.
  • Filling empty space with bottles of water makes a garage freezer noticeably more stable and gives it a longer holding time if the power trips while you are away.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a cold garage is easier on a freezer — The opposite is true for a standard appliance. The compressor stops running because the cabinet is cold enough to satisfy the thermostat, and the temperature inside then drifts up towards ambient without any warning.
  • Running it from an extension lead — A continuously loaded lead, often coiled, in a damp unheated space is an established fire risk, and it is the single most common unsafe thing in a British garage.

Questions people ask

Can I put my old kitchen freezer in the garage?

Check the rating plate for its climate class first. An N-class appliance will work through the summer and may stop holding temperature in a cold snap. If you do it anyway, put a min-max thermometer inside and check it weekly through the winter.

What about a fridge in a garage?

The same problem, and worse in one respect: in a very cold garage a fridge compartment can drop below freezing and freeze everything in it. The same climate class rules apply.

Does a garage freezer cost more to run?

In summer, yes — a hot garage makes the compressor work harder than a cool kitchen would. In winter it runs less. Over the year it is broadly a wash, and the deciding factor should be whether the appliance can hold temperature at all.
