Should I buy a chest freezer or an upright freezer?

Short answer

Chest freezers win on running cost, capacity per pound and holding time when the power goes off, because cold air does not fall out of an open lid. Uprights win on floor space, access and organisation. If it is going in a garage and you batch freeze, chest. If it is in the house and used daily, upright.

The physical difference is simple and it drives everything else. Cold air is denser than warm air, so when you open a chest freezer the cold sits in the box and very little escapes. When you open an upright, it pours out of the bottom and warm air rolls in at the top. That single fact explains the running cost difference, the power cut difference, and why chest freezers are harder to use.

  1. Start from where it will physically live.A chest freezer needs floor area and clear space above it to open the lid — check ceiling slopes, shelving and worktops. An upright needs less floor and more height. Garages and utility rooms suit chests; kitchens and box rooms suit uprights.
  2. Compare litres per pound, not headline size.Chest freezers typically give substantially more usable litres for the same money and the same energy. If you are storing bulk — half a lamb, a season of fruit, a month of batch cooking — that gap is the whole argument.
  3. Compare the annual kWh figures directly.Take the kWh per year off each energy label and multiply by your own unit rate.   4. Compare the temperature rise time.This is where chest freezers win decisively. Many quote 40-60 hours to rise from -18°C to -9°C with the power off, against 15-25 hours for a typical upright. If you live somewhere with unreliable power or you store a lot of value, that matters.
  5. Be honest about how you will find things.A chest freezer without a system becomes three layers of unidentifiable bags. It needs hanging baskets, labelled bags-within-bags by category, and a list. An upright organises itself with drawers. Households that will not run a system should buy the upright.
  6. Check whether you want frost free.Almost all chest freezers are static and need manual defrosting once or twice a year. Frost free is common on uprights. If manual defrosting is the thing you will never do, that pushes you towards an upright.
  7. Check the drain plug and the counterbalanced lid on a chest.A drain plug at the base turns defrosting from a bailing operation into a hose into a bucket. A counterbalanced lid that stays open where you leave it is worth more in daily use than any feature on the spec sheet.
  8. Check the climate class if it is going anywhere unheated.Garages and outbuildings drop below the minimum operating temperature of a standard N-class appliance in winter, at which point it stops running properly. This applies to both types equally.

  • Chest freezers hold temperature best when full. Fill the empty space with bottles of water — they cost nothing, they add thermal mass, and they double as emergency ice if the power fails.
  • Hanging baskets in a chest freezer are the difference between a usable freezer and a pit. Buy them with the appliance; they are hard to source later.
  • Use different coloured bags or crates by category in a chest freezer. You can identify a colour at arm's length, which you cannot do with a label.
