Why can I not centre clay on the potter's wheel?
Centring fails because the arms are unsupported, not because they are weak. The bracing that transfers force from your body, the two-hand geometry, and the coning that does most of the work.

Short answer
Sit close, lean in from the hips, and lock both elbows against your thighs or your body so your arms are a rigid link rather than the thing doing the pushing. One hand presses inwards from the side, the other presses down from the top. Then hold absolutely still and let the wheel do the work — any hand movement becomes a wobble.
Centring is the first thing taught and the thing that stops most beginners, and it stops them because it is counter-intuitive. Every instinct says push harder. The clay pushes back at exactly the force you apply, so an unsupported arm simply moves, and the harder you push the more it moves. The answer is bracing, not effort.

Step by step
- Wedge the clay properly first.Air pockets and uneven moisture make clay that cannot be centred, because different parts of it move differently under the same pressure. If centring feels impossible, wedging is the first thing to check.
- Throw the ball down hard and near the middle.A firm slap onto a slightly damp wheel head, as close to centre as you can judge. Clay that is not attached properly will shift under pressure, and starting well off centre makes everything harder.
- Set your seat and posture before you switch on.Sit close enough that you lean in from the hips with a straight back. Forearms resting on the thighs. If you have to reach, you cannot brace, and if you cannot brace you cannot centre.
- Lock your elbows into your body or your thighs.This is the whole technique. Your arms become a rigid strut, and the force comes from your body weight and your legs against the floor, not from your arm muscles. Braced, an average person can hold against clay indefinitely.
- Run the wheel reasonably fast for centring.Faster than for shaping. Speed helps the clay find the centre against your steady hands. Slow it right down later for opening and pulling walls.
- Use two hands as a pair.One hand on the outside pressing inwards towards the axis, the other on top pressing down and slightly towards the first. The clay is trapped between two forces meeting near its middle. Wrists braced together.
- Cone up and down two or three times.Squeeze the clay upwards into a tall cone, then press it back down into a low dome. Coning aligns the clay and drives out unevenness, and it does most of the actual centring. One pass is rarely enough.
- Keep hands wet but do not flood the clay.Enough water to let your hands slide. Too much water makes the clay slippery and progressively softer, which is the second most common reason a centred lump goes out again.
- Hold absolutely still and stop moving.Once you have pressure applied, freeze. Do not chase the clay. Any movement of your hand is transferred straight into the clay as a bump. The stillness is the skill.
- Release slowly.Ease the pressure off gradually and draw the hands away over several rotations. Lifting suddenly pulls the clay off centre and undoes the work you just did.
Tips
- Start with a smaller ball than you want. Small amounts of clay centre far more easily, and the technique is identical. Working up in size as bracing improves is much faster than fighting a big lump.
- Close your eyes for a few rotations once you think it is centred. A centred lump feels completely still under the hands; an off-centre one bumps rhythmically. Your hands detect it far better than your eyes do.
- If you are exhausted after two minutes, you are using your arms. Braced centring is not physically demanding, which is how potters do it all day.
Common mistakes
- Trying to centre with arm strength — The clay resists at exactly the force applied, so an unsupported arm gives way and the clay wins. It is the single reason beginners cannot centre, and bracing fixes it immediately.
- Chasing the clay with your hands — Moving your hands to follow a wobble adds the wobble into the clay permanently. Hold still and let the high spots come round to meet your hand instead.
- Too much water — It makes the surface slippery so pressure does not transfer, and it progressively softens the clay until the whole lump collapses. Wet hands, not a wet lump.
- Skipping wedging — Air pockets and uneven moisture produce clay that behaves differently in different places. No amount of technique centres badly wedged clay.
If it doesn't work
The clay wobbles rhythmically no matter what
Cause: Hands moving with the clay rather than staying still — Fix: Brace harder, freeze the hands, and let the high spot come round to meet them for several rotations before easing off.
It centres and then goes out again
Cause: Released too suddenly, or the clay became too wet — Fix: Ease pressure off over several rotations and draw the hands away slowly. Use less water.
The lump goes off centre as soon as you open it
Cause: It was never fully centred, or the opening hand was not braced — Fix: Cone up and down another two cycles. Brace the opening hand the same way as for centring.
Your arms and wrists ache after a few minutes
Cause: Working unsupported — Fix: Lower the seat or raise it so your forearms rest naturally on your thighs, sit closer, and lock the elbows in. Correct centring is not tiring.
A spiral ridge appears up the side
Cause: Hands moving upward while pressure is still applied — Fix: Apply pressure with still hands first, then move deliberately and slowly, keeping the movement continuous rather than jerky.
Questions people ask
How long does it take to learn?
Most people centre reliably within a few sessions once someone shows them the bracing, and struggle for months without it. If you are self-teaching from video, a single in-person lesson is usually the fastest money you will spend on this.
Does the direction the wheel turns matter?
Yes, and it determines which hand does which job. Most wheels can run either way, and you learn one direction. Left-handed potters commonly reverse it. Pick one and stay with it.
Do I need a wheel to make pottery?
No. Hand building — pinch pots, coils and slabs — produces everything from a mug to a large vessel and needs no equipment beyond your hands. A wheel is one technique, not the craft.
