Short answer

Cancel the agreement with the company first, then the direct debit at the bank. Doing it the other way round leaves the contract running and you in arrears.

Three different things get called "the payment": a direct debit, a standing order and a recurring card payment. They are cancelled in different places and behave differently, which is why this goes wrong so often.

Step by step

  1. Identify which type of payment it is.Direct debit: company pulls a variable amount. Standing order: you push a fixed amount. Recurring card payment: charged to your card number. Each is cancelled differently.
  2. Cancel the underlying agreement first. The contract is separate from the payment. Ending only the payment leaves the contract running and the arrears accumulating.
  3. Then cancel the payment at the bank. You have the right to cancel a direct debit at any time through your bank or banking app. It takes effect immediately.
  4. Tell the company you have cancelled it.Courtesy and self-protection. It prevents a failed collection being recorded as a missed payment against you.
  5. For recurring card payments, ask the bank to stop them. Also called continuous payment authority. Your bank must stop these if you ask, even if the company says otherwise.
  6. Know the Direct Debit Guarantee. If an incorrect amount is taken by direct debit, you are entitled to an immediate full refund from your bank. This is a strong protection and it is worth knowing about.
  7. Check the next statement.Confirm nothing further has been taken, and that the correct final payment went through.
  8. Keep a note of what you cancelled and when.If a dispute follows, the date you cancelled and the confirmation are what matters.

Tips

  • The Direct Debit Guarantee is genuinely strong — an incorrect amount must be refunded immediately by your bank on request.
  • Do not cancel a direct debit as a way of ending a contract. It is the most common route to an unexpected default on a credit file.
  • Review your direct debit list annually. Banks show them all in one place and it takes five minutes.
