How do I bake polymer clay without burning it?
Scorching is caused by radiant heat and a swinging thermostat, not by the temperature you set. The tile, the foil tent and the oven thermometer that between them prevent almost every burnt batch.

- Read the temperature and time on the packet, and use them.Brands differ, and so do the times for different thicknesses. The most common error is curing for too short a time at too high a temperature, which is the exact opposite of what the material wants.
- Buy an oven thermometer and put it at the level of the work.Domestic oven dials are frequently out by a substantial margin, and the air temperature at the shelf differs from the air at the sensor. This is a small purchase that eliminates the biggest variable in the whole process.
- Preheat and confirm before anything goes in.Run the oven up, let it settle, and read the thermometer. If it is above the target, adjust the dial down until the thermometer reads correctly. You are calibrating your oven once, for good.
- Stand the work on a ceramic tile.A tile is a heat store. It smooths out the swing as the thermostat cycles, and it stops heat coming up unevenly from the shelf. A thick baking sheet does a similar job less well.
- Tent foil over the work.A loose tent or an upturned foil tray blocks direct radiant heat from the top element, which is what scorches the upper surfaces while the air is still at the right temperature. Hot air still circulates underneath.
- Support thin and overhanging parts.Polymer clay softens before it hardens, so an unsupported thin arm or a projecting petal will sag during the cure. Prop it on wadded foil, cotton wool or baking paper.
- Cure for the full time, and longer for thick pieces.Curing is a chemical change through the whole thickness, not a surface drying. Under-cured clay is brittle and snaps. Longer at the correct temperature does no harm at all — it is heat, not time, that scorches.
- Let it cool before judging it.Polymer clay is soft and flexible while hot and reaches its final hardness as it cools. Everyone who thinks their clay failed to cure has tested it warm. Let it come to room temperature first.
- Ventilate the kitchen.Even a correct cure gives off a faint smell. A scorched batch gives off genuinely irritant fumes, so run the extractor and open a window as a matter of routine rather than as an emergency measure.
Tips
- Curing in two stages — a partial cure, then adding more clay, then a full cure — works well for complex pieces and does not weaken the result. Polymer clay bonds to cured polymer clay.
- A small dedicated oven or a toaster oven kept for polymer clay is a common solution, and it removes the food-contact question entirely. Check it holds temperature, because small ovens often swing more.
- Sandwiching a flat piece between two tiles gives an even cure and keeps it perfectly flat, which is otherwise difficult.
Common mistakes
- Trusting the oven dial — Domestic ovens routinely run well off their setting, and polymer clay scorches only a little above its cure temperature. A thermometer at shelf level is the only way to know.
- Curing hotter to cure faster — It scorches the surface, discolours light colours, releases irritant fumes and does not make the inside cure any faster. Time is the variable to increase, never temperature.
- Under-curing to be safe — Under-cured clay is brittle and snaps at the slightest stress, which is the most common cause of broken polymer clay jewellery. It is far more common than over-curing.
- Using food tools and surfaces — Polymer clay residue is not food safe, and the pasta machine, rolling pin, blades and baking tray you use for it should be permanently separate from anything used for eating.
If it doesn't work
The surface has darkened or gone brown
Cause: Radiant heat from the element, or the oven overshooting — Fix: Tent with foil and verify the temperature with a thermometer. A lightly darkened piece can sometimes be sanded and buffed; a badly scorched one is waste.
Light colours have yellowed
Cause: Cured too hot, or too long at too high a temperature — Fix: Lower the actual temperature — measured, not set — and tent. White and translucent colours are the most sensitive and show it first.
A thin part has sagged
Cause: Unsupported while the clay softened during the cure — Fix: Support with foil or cotton wool during curing. A sagged piece cannot be reshaped once cured.
The piece has a shiny patch on one side
Cause: Contact with a smooth surface such as glass or tile — Fix: Cure on baking paper or card, or on a bed of cornflour, if a matt surface matters. The shine can be sanded and matted afterwards.
Bubbles appeared during curing
Cause: Air trapped when conditioning, or moisture in the clay — Fix: Condition more thoroughly and press air out as you shape. Small surface bubbles can be sanded flat after curing.
Questions people ask
Can I bake polymer clay more than once?
Yes. Curing in stages is a normal technique and repeated curing at the correct temperature does not weaken the clay. Each cure is another opportunity to scorch it, so the tent and thermometer matter every time.
How do I know it is properly cured?
Once cool, a correctly cured thin piece flexes slightly rather than snapping cleanly. A thick piece should not be marked by a fingernail. Under-cured clay breaks with a dry, crumbly edge.
Is the smell dangerous?
A faint smell during a correct cure is normal. A strong acrid smell means the clay is decomposing above its cure temperature and is releasing irritants — turn the oven off, ventilate and leave the room.
