Why can I see brush marks and roller marks?
Paint that sets before it can level, and the four things that cause it.

Short answer
Marks appear when paint dries before it can flow level. Work faster, load the brush properly, do not go back over setting paint, and stop painting in direct sun or a hot room.
Good paint self-levels for a few minutes after application. Every cause of brush marks is something that shortened that window or disturbed the film during it.
Step by step
- Load the brush or roller properly.About a third of the bristle length, tapped rather than scraped off. A dry brush drags and leaves ridges; scraping it on the tin edge removes the paint you need.
- Lay it on, spread it, then leave it.Three light passes maximum. Going back over paint that has begun to set drags the film and leaves permanent marks. This is the most common cause.
- Keep a wet edge and work fast.Always brushing back into wet paint. Small sections, completed quickly, so nothing has time to set before you join to it.
- Do not paint in direct sun or a hot room.Heat shortens the levelling window dramatically. A sunlit wall or a room above about 25°C is very hard to paint smoothly.
- Use a good brush.Cheap brushes have coarse, uneven bristles that leave visible tracks and shed. A decent synthetic brush for water-based paint makes a real difference and lasts years.
- Match the roller nap to the surface.Short nap for smooth surfaces, longer for textured. Too long a nap on smooth plaster leaves an orange-peel texture.
- Finish in one direction with light strokes.For gloss and eggshell especially, lay off with light vertical strokes in the same direction. It aligns any remaining marks so they disappear.
- Thin the paint slightly if it is dragging.A small amount of water for water-based, or the manufacturer's thinner. Ten percent maximum. It extends the levelling time noticeably.
Tips
- Gloss and eggshell show brush marks far more than matt. On woodwork, a small foam or microfibre roller followed by very light laying-off gives an excellent finish.
- Do not overload the brush and then try to spread it a long way. Two loaded passes beat one dragged one.
- Paint conditioner extends the open time and genuinely helps in a warm room. It is a small bottle and it works.
