Why is my boiler or gas fire flame yellow or orange instead of blue?

Short answer
A properly burning gas appliance has a crisp blue flame. Yellow, orange or lazy flames mean the gas is not getting enough air and is burning incompletely, which produces carbon monoxide. Stop using the appliance, open windows, and call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not attempt any adjustment yourself — gas work is Gas Safe registered without exception.
Flame colour is the one combustion diagnostic a householder can perform, and it is worth knowing because carbon monoxide gives no other warning until people start feeling ill. Most modern condensing boilers have sealed combustion chambers where you cannot see the flame at all, so this applies mainly to gas fires, older open-flued boilers, cookers and hobs — but the principle is the same everywhere gas burns.

- Know what a correct flame looks like.Crisp, sharp-edged and blue, sitting steadily on the burner, sometimes with small blue cones. That is complete combustion: enough air is reaching the gas for it to burn fully to carbon dioxide and water.
- Recognise the warning appearance.Yellow or orange flames, lazy flames that drift and flicker, flames that lift off the burner, or flames noticeably larger than they used to be. Any of these means the air-to-gas ratio has gone wrong.
- Look for the other signs that go with it.Sooty black or brown staining around the appliance or above it. Increased condensation on windows in the room. A pilot light that keeps going out. A strange smell when it runs. Any two of these together with a yellow flame is a strong signal.
- Act immediately if you see it.Stop using the appliance. Open windows and doors to ventilate the room. Do not go to bed with it running. Call a Gas Safe registered engineer and describe what you have seen.
- Treat symptoms in people as the emergency they are.Headaches, nausea, dizziness, confusion, breathlessness or unusual drowsiness — particularly if more than one person has them, if pets are affected too, or if they improve when everyone leaves the house — mean carbon monoxide until proven otherwise. Get everyone out, ring the emergency gas service, and seek medical advice.
- Check your carbon monoxide alarm.Every home with a fuel-burning appliance needs an audible carbon monoxide alarm to the current British Standard, sited according to its instructions. Test it. If you do not have one, this is the day to buy one, and they cost very little.
- Do not attempt anything yourself.Cleaning burners, adjusting air shutters, clearing a flue, changing a jet — all of it is gas work, all of it is Gas Safe registered work, and none of it is a householder job however simple a video makes it look.
- Verify the engineer on the register.Check the card and check the register itself, and confirm they are qualified for the specific appliance type. Combustion faults are exactly the situation where an unregistered fitter does real harm.
Tips
- Most modern condensing boilers are room-sealed and you cannot see the flame. That is not a reason to skip the annual service — combustion is checked with an analyser rather than by eye.
- Carbon monoxide alarms have an expiry date printed on them, typically seven to ten years from manufacture. Check yours.
- Landlords have a legal duty to have gas appliances checked annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer and to give tenants the record. Ask for it.
- A blocked or partially obstructed flue produces exactly these symptoms. Never block an air vent that serves a gas appliance, even if the room feels draughty.
If it doesn't work
Yellow flames on a gas hob burner only
Cause: Usually a blocked or displaced burner cap, or spilled food in the burner ports — Fix: Cleaning a hob burner cap and crown, with the gas off and the parts cool, is ordinary cleaning. If it is correctly seated and clean and the flame is still yellow, stop and call an engineer.
Orange flickers in an otherwise blue gas fire flame
Cause: Dust or fibres burning off — briefly normal after cleaning or at the start of the season — Fix: Momentary orange flicker is common. Persistent yellow flames, or yellow across the whole burner, is not.
Sooty marks above a gas fire
Cause: Long-running incomplete combustion depositing carbon — Fix: Stop using it and get it inspected. Soot is physical evidence that carbon monoxide has been produced.
Pilot light keeps blowing out
Cause: Flue problems, draught, or a failing thermocouple — several of which also point at combustion or flue faults — Fix: Gas Safe engineer. Relighting a pilot repeatedly on an appliance that keeps losing it is not a fix.
Excessive condensation on windows since the appliance was serviced or moved
Cause: Water vapour from incomplete combustion entering the room — Fix: One of the classic secondary signs. Treat it seriously alongside flame colour.

Is a yellow flame always dangerous?
A brief orange flicker from dust burning off is common and harmless. A sustained yellow or orange flame is not, and it should always be treated as a combustion fault until an engineer says otherwise.
Can I clean the burner myself?
On a gas hob, cleaning the removable burner cap and crown with the appliance off and cool is normal cleaning. On a boiler or a gas fire, nothing inside is a householder job — the burner, the injector, the air shutter and the flue are all gas work.

The National Gas Emergency Service number, which is displayed on gas bills and widely published. Call from outside the property, do not use light switches, and follow their instructions.
