Do I need dust extraction in a home workshop?
Chips and fine dust are two different problems needing two different machines. Which one you actually need, why capture at the tool beats cleaning the air, and the vacuum specification that decides whether you are collecting dust or redistributing it.

Short answer
For sanding, cutting sheet material and masonry work, you need a workshop vacuum with a fine filter connected to the tool — high suction, narrow hose. For a planer or a table saw producing chips you need high airflow through a wide hose, which is a different machine. Capture at the tool, wear a rated mask anyway, and never sweep fine dust.
The instinct is to think about dust as mess, and to deal with it afterwards. The health question is about the fraction you cannot see, which stays airborne for hours after the tool stops and is not removed by cleaning up. That is why the whole strategy is capture at source: get it as it is made, before it disperses.

Step by step
- Separate the two problems.Chips and shavings are a volume and mess problem. Fine dust is a health problem. They need different airflow characteristics and, in a serious workshop, different machines. Trying to do both with one is why people are disappointed with their extraction.
- Connect the extractor to the tool.Almost every modern sander, router, plunge saw and mitre saw has a dust port. Capture at source removes the great majority of the dust before it becomes airborne, which is worth far more than any amount of cleaning afterwards.
- Get the hose and adaptor right.A poorly fitting adaptor leaks and loses most of the airflow. Adaptor kits are cheap and the fit at the tool is where extraction efficiency is won or lost. Tape a doubtful joint.
- Use a cyclone separator if you do a lot.A cyclone bucket between the tool and the vacuum drops the bulk of the material out before it reaches the filter. The filter stays clean, the suction stays constant, and emptying is easier. It is the cheapest meaningful upgrade to a shop vacuum.
- Check the filter class, not the power.The wattage on the box tells you about the motor and nothing about what comes out of the exhaust. A fine or HEPA-grade filter, or an M-class rating, is what determines whether the small fraction is captured or recirculated.
- Wear a rated mask as well.No domestic extraction captures everything, and the fines that escape are the ones that matter. FFP3 for fine wood dust, MDF and masonry; FFP2 as a minimum for general dusty work. Extraction and a mask are complementary, not alternatives.
- Ventilate and let it settle.Open a door or a window, and leave the space for a while after a dusty job rather than working on in it. Fine dust stays suspended for a long time and re-enters your breathing zone every time you move about.
- Never sweep fine dust.Sweeping puts hours of settled dust back into the air in seconds and is one of the highest-exposure things that happens in a workshop. Vacuum it, or damp it down first.
- Empty and clean it outside.Emptying a full vacuum indoors undoes the work. Do it outdoors, wearing the mask, and knock the filter out there too.
- Take the worst jobs outside.Cutting masonry, mixing plaster or compound, sanding filler on a large area. Doing them outdoors with a mask on is more effective than any extraction you will fit in a domestic garage.
Tips
- A tool-triggered socket on the vacuum, which starts it when the tool starts and runs on for a few seconds, is the feature that makes people actually use extraction. Without it, the vacuum stays switched off.
- Cutting masonry, concrete or fibre cement dry produces silica dust. Wet cutting, or an on-tool extractor with an M-class vacuum, are the two controls that work; a dust mask alone is not enough for sustained cutting.
- MDF dust is fine, plentiful and contains bonding resin. Treat it as one of the worse ones and extract at the tool.
- Antistatic hoses reduce the shocks you get from a plastic hose in a dry workshop, which are startling rather than dangerous but do make you drop things.

- Using a household vacuum on fine dust — It captures the visible part and blows the respirable fraction back into the room through its filter, while the fine dust destroys the motor bearings.
- Cleaning up afterwards instead of extracting at source — By the time you clean up, the harmful fraction has been airborne and breathed for as long as you were working.
- Relying on extraction and not wearing a mask — Domestic on-tool extraction typically captures most but not all of the dust, and the part that escapes is the fine part. The mask covers the gap.
- Ignoring the filter until suction drops — A clogged filter both reduces capture and stresses the motor. Clean or replace it on a schedule rather than on symptoms.
Alternatives
- Workshop vacuum with a fine filter: High suction through a 32 to 38mm hose. The right machine for sanders, routers, jigsaws, plunge saws and masonry work, and the one most home workshops need. Look for a fine or HEPA-grade filter and a tool-triggered socket that starts the vacuum with the tool.
- Chip extractor or dust collector: High airflow at low suction through a 100mm hose. For a planer thicknesser, a bandsaw or a table saw, which produce volume rather than fines. It moves a lot of material and, without a fine cartridge filter, it passes the small fraction straight through the bag.
- Class M or H rated extractor: A vacuum certified for a defined dust class with filter monitoring. Class M is the sensible choice for wood and general construction dust; class H is for the most hazardous. More expensive, and the difference is in the tested filtration rather than the suction.
- Air filtration unit: A ceiling-hung box that recirculates and filters room air. It reduces the airborne fines that escaped capture, over a period of hours. It is a supplement to extraction at the tool, never a replacement, because it only treats dust that has already got into your breathing zone.
- An ordinary household vacuum: A poor choice. The filtration is designed for household soil, the fine fraction passes through and is blown back into the room, the motor is damaged by fine dust, and the bag clogs quickly. Better than nothing for chips; actively unhelpful for fines.
Questions people ask
Is a cheap shop vacuum good enough?
For chips and general clean-up, yes. For fine dust, only if it has a fine or HEPA-grade filter fitted — many budget machines do not, and the standard filter passes the fraction you most want to capture. Check what filter is available for the machine before buying it.
Do I need an air filtration unit?
Only after extraction at the tool is sorted. It deals with what escaped, over hours, and it does nothing about the dust in front of your face while you are working. Extraction first, mask second, air filtration third.
What about working in the garden instead?
It is a genuinely good answer for the dustiest jobs, and it is what most people should do with masonry cutting and large sanding jobs. Wind disperses the dust, and you still wear the mask.
