What is the difference between a wood screw and a chipboard screw?
Two screws that look nearly identical and behave differently — the thread, the shank and the point, and which one belongs in solid timber and which in board.

Short answer
A traditional wood screw has a tapered shank, a coarse thread over part of its length and a plain shank under the head. A chipboard screw has a parallel shank, a sharper and often twin-start thread running most or all of its length, and a needle point. Chipboard screws drive faster and grip board better; wood screws clamp two pieces of solid timber better.
Almost every screw sold loose in a UK merchant today is what used to be called a chipboard screw, and the traditional tapered wood screw has become a specialist item you buy deliberately. Knowing which you have in your hand explains most of the odd behaviour people report — joints that will not close, screws that split hardwood, and screws that snap in oak.

- Look at the shank.A traditional wood screw tapers from head to point and has a smooth unthreaded shank under the head. A chipboard screw is parallel-sided for its whole length with no taper at all.
- Look at how far the thread runs.Wood screws are threaded over roughly the lower two thirds. Chipboard screws are commonly threaded almost to the head, or have only a short plain section. That difference decides whether the screw pulls a joint together.
- Look at the point.A chipboard screw has a fine needle point that starts without a pilot in softwood and board. A wood screw's point is blunter and generally wants a pilot hole.
- Use chipboard screws for board materials and general softwood work.The sharp twin-start thread cuts rather than wedges, which matters enormously in chipboard and MDF where a wedging thread simply bursts the material apart.
- Use a partially threaded screw wherever two pieces have to be pulled tight.This is the real decision, and it cuts across both types. A thread gripping both pieces jacks them apart no matter what the screw is called.
- Use traditional wood screws in hardwood and in period joinery.A tapered shank in a tapered pilot hole is far less likely to split oak or beech, and slotted brass wood screws are what period ironmongery is designed around visually.
- Pilot everything in hardwood, whichever you use.Neither type will forgive being driven dry into oak near an edge.
Tips
- "Wood screw" on a box in a shed is now usually a chipboard-pattern screw with a hardened coating. Read the picture on the box rather than the word.
- Twin-thread screws drive roughly twice as fast per turn, which is why they feel so much quicker in a cordless driver — and why they strip a soft hole quicker too.
- In chipboard, screw diameter matters more than length. Going up a gauge in a hole that has already failed usually works; going longer usually does not.
Common mistakes
- Using a fully threaded screw to join two boards — The thread grips the top piece as well as the bottom and holds them apart. No amount of extra torque closes the gap.
- Driving a chipboard screw into the edge of MDF without a pilot — The edge of MDF is the weakest place in the material and the wedging action delaminates it. It needs a pilot every time.

Can I use wood screws in chipboard?
