Why will my wireless room thermostat not connect to the boiler?

Short answer
Change the batteries first, then re-run the binding procedure between the thermostat and its receiver with the two units next to each other. Check the receiver's status light and use its manual override to prove the boiler still works. Most cases are flat batteries, a lost pairing after a power cut, or the thermostat having been carried out of range.
A wireless thermostat is two devices pretending to be one: a battery-powered thermostat you can carry around, and a mains-powered receiver near the boiler that actually switches it. Almost every fault is a failure of the link between them, and almost every fix is a procedure rather than a repair. The important thing is to know that the receiver has a manual override, so you are never without heating while you work it out.

Step by step
- Find the receiver.A small box near or on the boiler, or occasionally in the airing cupboard. It has a status light and usually a manual override button. This is the half that switches the boiler; the thermostat is only a remote control.
- Prove the boiler works using the override.Press the receiver's manual or override button. If the boiler fires and the heating comes on, the boiler and the wiring are fine and your entire problem is the wireless link. That single test rules out most of the expensive possibilities.
- Change the thermostat batteries.Use fresh alkaline cells, not rechargeables, which sit at a lower voltage and cause exactly this fault as they age. Low batteries often show as a display that works fine while the radio has quietly stopped transmitting — the screen lies about the state of the link.
- Read the status lights.Most receivers show one light for power and one for the radio link, and most thermostats show a link icon. Understanding what yours indicates is the difference between guessing and diagnosing. The manual for the model is nearly always online if the paper one is long gone.
- Re-run the binding procedure.Every wireless pair has one: usually holding a button on the receiver until a light flashes, then triggering a bind from the thermostat's menu within a time window. Do it with the two units in the same room, a metre apart. Once bound, put the thermostat back where it lives.
- Check the range and what is in the way.Solid walls, foil-backed insulation, foil-faced plasterboard, metal studwork, mirrors and large appliances all attenuate the signal badly. A thermostat that has been moved to a new room, or a receiver behind a new boiler casing, can drop out of range without anything having failed.
- Consider interference.These systems share congested unlicensed radio bands with a great deal of other equipment. A new router, baby monitor, smart meter or neighbour's kit occasionally coincides with the fault starting. Moving the receiver or the thermostat a short distance can be enough.
- Rule out the rest of the controls.A working link with no heat is a different fault. Check the programmer schedule, the TRVs, the motorised valve and whether the boiler is in lockout. A thermostat calling correctly into a system that will not respond is not a thermostat problem.
Tips
- Note the make and model of both the thermostat and the receiver and keep it somewhere. Binding procedures are model-specific and completely different between manufacturers.
- Change the batteries as an annual habit, in autumn before the heating season, rather than waiting for the fault.
- Rechargeable cells are a common hidden cause. Their nominal voltage is lower than alkaline and marginal designs stop transmitting long before the display dims.
- If a thermostat is going to be replaced anyway, consider whether a wired one is practical — no batteries, no binding, no range.
If it doesn't work
Thermostat display works, boiler never responds
Cause: The radio link has dropped even though the screen is alive — most often weak batteries — Fix: New alkaline batteries and re-bind. If it recurs within weeks, the thermostat is failing.
Worked until a power cut
Cause: The receiver lost its pairing or its internal schedule when the supply was interrupted — Fix: Re-run the binding procedure and re-enter the schedule. Some models also need the clock resetting.
Works in some rooms and not others
Cause: Marginal signal — the thermostat is at the edge of range and small movements push it in and out — Fix: Site it permanently within reliable range, or move the receiver. Where that is impossible, a wired thermostat is the reliable answer.
Heating runs constantly regardless of the thermostat
Cause: The receiver's manual override has been left engaged, or the link has failed in the calling state — Fix: Check the override button first. Some receivers default to on when the link is lost, which is deliberate — better a warm house than frozen pipes.
Boiler does not respond even to the receiver override
Cause: This is no longer a thermostat problem — the boiler, the wiring, or a valve — Fix: Move on to the boiler and the motorised valves. The thermostat has been eliminated.
Questions people ask
Can I use the override permanently while I sort it out?
Yes, as a stopgap, but the heating then has no room temperature control at all and will run whenever the programmer allows. Set the programmer to short periods while you are on override.
Will any thermostat work with my boiler?
Not necessarily. Simple on/off thermostats are largely interchangeable, but boilers with modulating controls, OpenTherm or proprietary protocols need a compatible controller to get the benefit. Match the replacement to the boiler.
Why does mine work fine in summer and drop out in winter?
Cold reduces battery performance markedly, especially in a hall or a room with an outside wall. A marginal link fails first on cold mornings, which is exactly when you notice.
