Why do my jigsaw blades keep breaking or bending?

Six causes, from forcing a turn to a worn guide roller — and why a blade that breaks in the same place every time is telling you which one it is.

Short answer

Stop steering the saw. Almost every broken blade comes from twisting it sideways in the kerf — forcing a curve tighter than the blade's width allows, or pushing the saw round a corner. Use a narrow scrolling blade for tight curves, let the blade cut its own path, switch off the pendulum action for curves, and fit a bi-metal blade, which flexes instead of shattering.

A jigsaw blade that snaps at speed throws a hardened steel fragment, usually upwards and forwards. Wear eye protection whenever the saw is running. Let the blade stop completely before withdrawing it from a cut, and never reach under a workpiece to feel for the blade.

Step by step

  1. Note where the blade breaks.At the shank, right at the clamp, means fatigue from side loading and vibration. Part way down the blade means it was being twisted or was hitting something hard. Teeth stripped rather than the blade broken means the wrong tooth count for the thickness.
  2. Stop forcing curves.The width of the blade behind the teeth sets the tightest radius it can turn. Forcing a tighter one twists the blade in the kerf until it fatigues and snaps. For tight radii, fit a narrow scrolling blade, or drill relief holes at the tightest points and cut into them.
  3. Switch off the pendulum action for curves and for metal.Pendulum or orbital action swings the blade forward on the upstroke for a much faster cut. It also makes the blade wander and stresses it in curves, and it is wrong for metal and for laminates. Set it to zero for anything except fast straight cuts in timber.
  4. Use the shortest blade that clears the material.Excess unsupported blade below the workpiece whips, deflects and fatigues. Long blades exist for thick stock, not as a default.
  5. Let the shoe stay flat and press down.If the shoe lifts, the blade is unsupported at the top as well as the bottom and takes the whole side load. Keep firm downward pressure on the shoe throughout, especially with a down-cut blade, which actively tries to lift the saw.
  6. Check the guide roller.There is a small roller behind the blade that supports it against the cutting force. If it is worn flat, seized or grooved, the blade has nothing behind it and both wander and breakage follow. Replacing it is inexpensive; some are user-serviceable, some need a service.
  7. Clamp the work so it cannot vibrate.A workpiece that flaps in sympathy with the blade puts a cyclic side load on it. Clamp thin sheet close to the cut, and back it with scrap where you can.
  8. Fit bi-metal blades.A bi-metal blade has hardened teeth welded to a springy backing, so it bends where a fully hardened blade shatters. For anything that might meet a nail, or any long cut, they are worth the extra.
  9. Match the tooth count to the thickness.Fewer than three teeth in the cut and the blade catches on every stroke, which strips teeth and eventually breaks the blade. Fine teeth in thick timber pack solid, overheat and anneal the steel.

Tips

  • If the blade wanders out of vertical rather than breaking, that is a related but separate problem with its own causes — blade flex, the shoe knocked off its detent and the guide roller.
  • Keep the blade clamp clean. Compacted dust in a tool-free clamp stops the blade seating fully, and a blade held on half its shank always breaks at the shank.
  • Buy blades in mixed multi-packs. Treating them as consumables rather than as tools is the mindset shift that stops most breakages.

If it doesn't work

Blade snaps right at the shank

Cause: Fatigue from repeated side loading, or a clamp that is not gripping squarely — Fix: Stop steering the cut, check the blade seats fully in the clamp, and clean sawdust out of the clamp mechanism.

Blade bends and the cut bevels but nothing breaks

Cause: Blade flex under a fast feed, or a worn guide roller — Fix: Slow the feed, use a thicker or shorter blade, and check the roller.

Blade goes blue and stops cutting

Cause: Overheating — too fine a tooth count, too slow a feed, or no lubricant in metal — Fix: Coarser blade in timber, slower speed with cutting oil in metal, and let the blade cool between cuts.

Teeth strip off in one patch

Cause: The blade hit a nail, a screw or grit — Fix: Fit a bi-metal nail-tolerant blade for reclaimed timber, and check the material with a magnet or a detector first.

Blades break only when cutting metal

Cause: Pendulum action left on, speed too high, or no clamping — Fix: Zero pendulum, lowest speed setting, clamp the work hard, and use cutting oil.
