Why is my car air conditioning not blowing cold?

Most cars that stop blowing cold have simply lost refrigerant slowly over years. The checks you can do yourself, the ones you cannot, and why the DIY cans are a false economy.

Short answer

Air conditioning systems lose a small percentage of refrigerant every year through the seals, so after several years there is not enough left to cool. That is the most common cause by far and it needs a garage with recovery equipment. First, though, check the cabin filter, the condenser at the front for blockage, and whether the compressor clutch is engaging.

The useful thing to know before spending money is that this is normally not a fault in the sense of something breaking. A car air conditioning system is designed to leak slowly — the refrigerant permeates through flexible hoses and past seals at a few percent a year — so a system that has never been serviced in eight years has simply run down. The checks below separate that from the smaller number of cases that are something else.

Do not attempt to recharge a car air conditioning system yourself. Refrigerant is handled under F-gas regulations and requires a qualified technician with recovery equipment — it is an offence to vent it to atmosphere. DIY top-up cans commonly overfill the system, contain sealants that damage professional recovery equipment and can wreck the compressor, and garages may refuse to work on a system afterwards. Never open a refrigerant line: the escaping liquid causes severe cold burns.

Step by step

  1. Confirm what it is actually doing.Blowing warm at all times, blowing cool but not cold, cold at speed but warm in traffic, or cold on one side only. Each points somewhere different. Run it with the engine warm, fan high, on recirculate with the windows shut, and put a thermometer in the centre vent so you have a number rather than an impression.
  2. Check the cabin filter first.A blocked pollen filter restricts airflow, so the air coming out is weak even if it is cold. It is a cheap part, usually behind the glovebox, and often changeable in ten minutes without tools. Poor airflow with a musty smell is the classic sign, and it is the most commonly neglected item on the whole system.
  3. Look at the condenser at the front of the car.The condenser sits ahead of the radiator and rejects the heat. It fills with leaves, insects, road debris and mud, and once blocked the system cannot shed heat — which is why a blocked condenser most often shows up as cold at speed but warm when stationary in traffic. Rinse it gently from the engine side outwards with low-pressure water, never a pressure washer, which flattens the fins.
  4. Listen for the compressor clutch.With the engine idling and the air conditioning switched on, listen and look at the compressor pulley — you should hear a click and see the centre plate begin to turn as the clutch engages. If it never engages, the system may be locked out by low refrigerant pressure, which is the protection working, or there is an electrical fault or a failed clutch.
  5. Check the cooling fans are running.The condenser needs airflow through it, and at low speed that comes from the electric fans. If the fans are not running when the air conditioning is on, the system cannot reject heat in traffic. This is another cause of the cold-at-speed, warm-in-traffic pattern.
  6. Recognise the slow-leak pattern.Gradually less cold over a couple of summers, ending with air that is merely not warm, on a car that has never had the system serviced, is the overwhelmingly common story. There is nothing to find and nothing to fix except recharging it properly — and if it has been recharged and lost it again within a season, there is a leak that needs tracing with dye or a sniffer.
  7. Get it done properly rather than with a can.A garage will recover what is left, pull a vacuum on the system to remove air and moisture, check it holds that vacuum — which is itself a leak test — and then weigh in exactly the specified charge along with the correct oil. That sequence is why it works and why a can cannot replicate it. Ask which refrigerant your car uses, since the newer type is considerably more expensive than the older one.
  8. Avoid the DIY top-up cans.They cannot remove air and moisture, they have no way to weigh the charge so overfilling is easy and overfilling reduces cooling and can destroy the compressor, and most contain a sealant that contaminates a garage's recovery equipment — which is why many garages refuse to touch a system afterwards or charge extra to clean out. It is one of the clearest false economies in car maintenance.
  9. Deal with a smell separately.Air that is cold but smells musty is bacterial growth on the wet evaporator rather than a cooling fault. That has its own guide, and running the system on fresh air for the last few minutes of a journey helps dry the evaporator and prevent it.
  10. Run it year-round.The refrigerant carries the compressor's lubricating oil, so a system left unused all winter dries its seals and leaks faster. Running the air conditioning for a few minutes at least monthly, in every season, genuinely extends its life and is free.

Tips

  • Ask which refrigerant the car uses before booking. Cars from roughly the mid-2010s onwards generally use the newer type, which costs considerably more to recharge — worth knowing before you are surprised by the bill.
  • An air conditioning service is not part of a standard car service and almost never happens unless you ask for it.
  • A thermometer in the centre vent turns a vague impression into a number, which is far more useful when describing the fault to a garage.
  • If the system has been empty for a long time, the compressor may have been running without lubrication and may not survive a recharge. A garage should tell you this risk before you commit.
  • Air conditioning also dries the air, which is what clears a misted windscreen fastest in any season. A system that has stopped working takes that with it.

Common mistakes

  • Using a DIY recharge can — No vacuum, no moisture removal, no way to weigh the charge, and usually a sealant that contaminates garage equipment. Overfilling reduces cooling and can destroy the compressor.
  • Recharging repeatedly without finding the leak — It is expensive, it vents refrigerant to the atmosphere, and the problem returns every season. Ask for a leak trace after the second recharge at the latest.
  • Pressure washing the condenser — The fins are thin and flatten easily, which permanently reduces the system's ability to shed heat. Use low-pressure water from the engine side outwards.
  • Never using the air conditioning in winter — The refrigerant carries the compressor oil, so a system left idle dries its seals and leaks faster. A few minutes a month all year extends its life.

If it doesn't work

Cold at speed, warm in stationary traffic

Cause: The condenser cannot reject heat at low airflow — blocked with debris, or the cooling fans are not running — Fix: Clean the condenser gently from the engine side out, and check the fans run when the air conditioning is on. If the fans do not run, that is an electrical diagnosis.

Airflow weak from all vents

Cause: Blocked cabin pollen filter — Fix: Replace it. Cheap, usually behind the glovebox, often a ten-minute job with no tools.

Gradually less cold over two or three summers

Cause: Normal refrigerant loss through hoses and seals — Fix: Have it evacuated, vacuum-tested and recharged by weight at a garage. Do not use a top-up can.

Compressor clutch never engages

Cause: Low-pressure lockout protecting the compressor, an electrical fault, or a failed clutch — Fix: Have the pressures read properly. Low-pressure lockout usually means the refrigerant has gone, which is the common case.

Recharged last year and warm again already

Cause: A genuine leak rather than normal permeation — Fix: Ask for a leak trace with dye or an electronic detector before paying for another recharge, or you are buying refrigerant to release into the atmosphere.

Cold but smells musty when first switched on

Cause: Bacterial growth on the damp evaporator, not a cooling fault — Fix: Have it treated, and run the system on fresh air for the last few minutes of each journey to dry the evaporator.
