Why is my camellia dropping its buds without flowering?
Bud drop, brown flowers and no buds at all are three different problems — separating them, and the summer watering that fixes the most common one.

Short answer
Bud drop is nearly always a water problem the previous summer, when the buds were forming. Camellias set next year's buds in July and August, so a dry August means dropped buds the following March. Water them through summer and mulch.
Camellias are shallow-rooted, evergreen and often planted against a wall in the driest position in the garden. The flower buds they carry through winter were set eight months earlier, which is why the cause and the symptom are so far apart in time.
Step by step
- Separate the three problems.Buds forming then falling off before opening is bud drop. Buds opening to brown mushy flowers is frost or rain damage. No buds at all is a shade or feeding problem.
- Think back to the previous summer.Buds are initiated in July and August. A dry spell then, particularly for a plant in a pot or against a wall, is the commonest cause of bud drop the following spring.
- Water thoroughly through summer. This is the actual fix and it has to happen months before the symptom. A weekly deep soak from June to September, more in a container.
- Mulch generously.Camellias root near the surface. A 50mm mulch of composted bark or leaf mould, kept clear of the stem, conserves moisture and protects the roots.
- Move it out of morning sun.Frozen buds and flowers thaw too quickly in early morning sun and turn brown. An east-facing wall is the classic wrong position for a camellia in the UK.
- Check the pH if there are no buds and the leaves are pale.Camellias need acid conditions. Yellowing with green veins means the pH is too high, usually from hard tap water in a container.
- Feed at the right time.An ericaceous feed in spring after flowering and again in early summer. Feeding in late summer or autumn produces soft growth rather than buds.
- Do not prune in winter or spring.Camellias flower on wood made the previous year. Prune, if at all, straight after flowering. Cutting in autumn or winter removes the buds.
- Check for scale insect.Brown or white waxy scales on stems and leaf undersides, with sticky honeydew and sooty mould. Heavy infestations weaken the plant enough to cause bud drop.
- Use rainwater in containers.A potted camellia watered with hard tap water declines slowly as the compost pH rises. Rainwater is the durable answer.
Tips
- Bud drop in March is caused by dry soil the previous August.
- Never plant a camellia where it gets early morning sun — frozen buds thaw too fast and go brown.
- Feed after flowering, not in autumn.
Common mistakes
- Watering heavily in spring to save the buds — The buds were determined the previous summer. Spring watering is good practice but it will not rescue buds that formed under drought stress.
- Pruning a camellia in winter to tidy it — The flower buds are already on the plant and sitting on last year's wood. Any pruning happens straight after flowering.
If it doesn't work
Buds swell then fall off
Cause: Drought the previous summer — Fix: Water deeply through June to September, and mulch. The improvement shows the following spring.
Flowers open brown and mushy
Cause: Frost or rain on the open flowers, worsened by morning sun — Fix: Move away from an east-facing position, or accept some damage in a bad year.
No buds at all
Cause: Too much shade, wrong feeding, or pruned at the wrong time — Fix: More light, ericaceous feed after flowering, and prune only immediately after flowering.
Yellow leaves with green veins
Cause: High pH, usually from tap water — Fix: Rainwater, fresh ericaceous compost, and chelated iron for immediate relief.
Questions people ask
Why do the buds fall off before opening?
Nearly always water stress the previous July and August, when the buds were being formed. The plant sets more buds than it can support and sheds them when reserves are short.
Why do the flowers go brown?
Frost, and particularly frost followed by early morning sun, which thaws the tissue too quickly. It is why camellias should not be planted on an east-facing wall.
When should I feed a camellia?
With an ericaceous feed straight after flowering, and again in early summer while the buds are forming. Do not feed in late summer or autumn.
