Why does my kettle switch off before it boils?
Nearly always scale, an underfilled element or a lid that is not shutting — three causes with three simple checks, and the point at which a kettle is finished.

Short answer
Check the fill level first: below the minimum mark the element overheats and the safety cut-out operates before the water boils. Then check the lid is fully closed, because the steam has to reach the thermostat in the handle. Then descale it, because scale insulates the element and makes it run hot enough to trip early.
A kettle switches off when steam reaches a bimetallic thermostat, usually in the handle, or when a separate dry-boil cut-out senses the element getting too hot. Early switch-off means one of those two is being triggered before the water has boiled, and there are only a handful of reasons that happens.

Step by step
- Check you are above the minimum fill mark.Below it, the element is not fully covered and gets hot faster than the water does. The dry-boil protection operates and the kettle switches off, usually with a click and a smell of hot metal. This is the most common cause and the easiest to miss.
- Close the lid properly and check the catch.The thermostat is triggered by steam travelling up a channel, usually in the handle. An open or partly latched lid lets the steam escape and can cause either early cut-off from a different sensor or the opposite fault of never switching off. A worn lid catch is a common cause on older kettles.
- Look inside at the element or the base plate.A white or brown crust means scale. On a concealed-element kettle the whole base plate will look dull, rough or discoloured rather than smooth and bright. That layer insulates the element from the water, so the element runs much hotter than the water it is heating.
- Descale it properly and repeat if needed.Fill to about half with a descaling solution, citric acid or white vinegar and water, follow the product's contact time, then rinse thoroughly and boil-and-discard twice. In a very hard-water area a heavily scaled kettle may need two passes.
- Check the vent channel for the steam.Some kettles have a small vent hole in the lid or a channel in the handle. Scale or debris in it stops steam reaching the thermostat and produces erratic switching. A cocktail stick clears it.
- Test on a full fill after descaling.A kettle that boils properly at maximum but cuts out at a low fill is behaving as designed. One that still cuts out early on a full fill after descaling has a failing thermostat or cut-out.
- Retire it if the thermostat has failed.The thermostat and the dry-boil cut-out are safety components inside a sealed base. They are not owner-serviceable and, on a kettle, replacement is not economic. A kettle that will not switch off at all is the more urgent version of the same fault and should be unplugged immediately.
Tips
- Descale monthly in a hard-water area and quarterly elsewhere. It is quicker than dealing with the consequences and it keeps the boil time down.
- Never fill a kettle above the maximum mark. Overfilling pushes boiling water out of the spout, and on some designs the spilled water reaches the base connector.
- If the kettle switches off early only when it is nearly empty, that is the dry-boil protection working correctly. It is not a fault.
- Empty the kettle rather than leaving water standing in it. Standing water accelerates scale deposition and gives a stale taste.
Common mistakes
- Descaling and not rinsing thoroughly — Residual acid gives the next several boils a sharp taste and, with vinegar, a smell that lingers. Two boil-and-discard cycles after rinsing is the standard.
- Continuing to use a kettle that will not switch off — That is the failure mode with a real risk — a kettle boiling dry with the cut-out failed. Unplug it and replace it rather than watching it.
If it doesn't work
Cuts out only at low fill levels
Cause: Element not covered, dry-boil protection operating — Fix: Fill above the minimum mark. This is correct behaviour, not a fault.
Cuts out early and there is visible scale
Cause: Scale insulating the element so it runs hot — Fix: Descale with citric acid or a proprietary solution, rinse well, and boil-and-discard twice. Repeat if heavily scaled.
Erratic switching, lid does not latch firmly
Cause: Steam not reaching the thermostat — Fix: Check the lid catch and the steam vent. A blocked vent clears with a cocktail stick; a broken catch usually means a new kettle.
Cuts out early on a full descaled kettle
Cause: Failing thermostat or cut-out — Fix: Replace the kettle. The base is sealed and these are not economically repairable parts.
Never switches off
Cause: Failed thermostat — Fix: Unplug it immediately and replace it. This is the version of the fault with a genuine risk attached.
