Why does my heating come on in the middle of summer?
Five reasons radiators get warm in July, from harmless pipe heat to a genuinely stuck valve, and how to tell which one you have.

Short answer
Warm radiators in summer are usually one of: hot water heating passing heat into nearby pipework, a stuck motorised valve, gravity circulation through a radiator on the flow pipe, a TRV that has seized open, or the boiler's own frost protection running. Feel whether the whole radiator is hot or just the pipes, and note whether it coincides with the hot water schedule.
Almost everyone with a heating system notices this at some point: the heating is definitely off, the programmer says so, and yet a radiator is warm. Some causes are entirely normal and cost you almost nothing. Others are a valve that has failed and is quietly burning gas all summer. The distinction is easy to make once you know what to feel for.

Step by step
- Establish what is actually warm.The whole radiator, top to bottom, or only the pipes at the bottom and the first few centimetres? Pipe-only warmth is heat conducting from the flow and return running nearby and is usually harmless. A radiator hot all over is being fed.
- Note the timing against the hot water schedule.If the warmth appears during and shortly after the hot water heating period, the heat is coming from the cylinder circuit, either by conduction along shared pipework or through a valve not fully closing.
- Check the motorised valve.Feel the pipes either side of the heating valve. Both hot when nothing is calling means the valve is passing. Check the manual lever has not been left in MAN, and listen to whether the valve moves at all when you turn the room thermostat up and down.
- Look for gravity circulation.In an older system, hot water rising naturally through pipework can heat a radiator on the flow pipe near the boiler, even with the pump off and every valve shut. It shows up as one specific radiator — often a towel rail or a hall radiator — that is always slightly warm. A gravity check valve or a properly closing zone valve is the cure.
- Check the TRVs.A TRV pin seized in the open position leaves that radiator permanently connected. The clue is that it is always the same radiator. Take the head off and press the pin — it should spring back freely. A stuck pin can often be freed by working it gently with pliers or a light tap.
- Consider the frost protection.Boilers and some controls run a frost function that fires the boiler and pump if the system falls near freezing, regardless of the programmer. It should not operate in summer, but a failed or badly sited frost stat can. Rare, but it explains an otherwise inexplicable summer firing.
- Check for a pump overrun.Many boilers run the pump for a few minutes after firing to dissipate residual heat from the heat exchanger. That pushes warm water round the circuit and can put mild heat into radiators after a hot water cycle. Entirely normal and by design.
- Decide whether it costs you anything.Pipe warmth and pump overrun cost almost nothing. A passing motorised valve or a seized TRV means the boiler is heating rooms nobody wants heated every time it fires, all summer. That one is worth fixing.
Tips
- Turning every TRV down for the summer is a reasonable habit. It costs nothing and means a passing valve heats nothing.
- If your system has a summer setting on the programmer — hot water only — use it rather than relying on the room thermostat being above room temperature.
- A towel rail without a TRV that stays warm all summer is usually intentional on some installations. If you do not want it, a lockshield on the return will let you close it off.
- Do not leave the boiler switched off entirely all summer: the pump and valves seize. The programmer's hot-water-only mode keeps everything moving.
If it doesn't work
One radiator always slightly warm, others cold
Cause: Gravity circulation through a radiator close to the boiler, or a seized TRV pin on that radiator — Fix: Check the TRV pin first, since it is free. If the pin is fine, the circuit needs a check valve or a properly closing zone valve.
All radiators warm during the hot water period
Cause: The motorised valve serving the heating is passing, or on Y-plan the mid-position valve is not fully rotating to the hot water position — Fix: Valve diagnosis as above. This is genuinely wasting fuel and is worth attending to.
Only the pipes near the floor are warm
Cause: Heat conducting into the radiator tails from the flow and return running beneath the floor — Fix: Nothing wrong. Lagging the pipes under the floor reduces it and is worth doing for efficiency anyway.
Boiler fires briefly at odd times with nothing calling
Cause: Pump and boiler anti-seize cycles, which many boilers run periodically to stop the pump sticking, or the frost function — Fix: The anti-seize cycle is deliberate and useful. Frost protection operating in summer is not, and points at a sensor problem.
Heating on properly, thermostat off, programmer off
Cause: Manual lever left in MAN, or a valve stuck fully open — Fix: Check the lever. If it is in AUTO, this is a failed valve and worth a call — the boiler is heating the house in July.
Questions people ask
Is it wasting a lot of money?
It depends which cause. Pipe warmth and pump overrun are negligible. A passing zone valve heating the whole house every time the cylinder reheats is a real cost across a summer, and it also means the valve has failed and will not work correctly in winter either.
Should I just turn the boiler off?
Not for the whole summer — pumps and valves seize when they never move, and the first cold day becomes a call-out. Turning the boiler off temporarily is a fine way to confirm the heat is coming from it, though.
Could it be the neighbours' heating in a flat?
In a block with communal heating or shared risers, yes, warmth from a riser passing through your cupboard or wall is common. Feel whether the heat is in a pipe passing through rather than in your own radiator circuit.
