Why are my blueberry leaves turning yellow?

Yellow leaves with sharply green veins on the newest growth is iron chlorosis. The soil or compost has become too alkaline for the plant to take up iron, almost always because of hard tap water. Switch to rainwater, repot into fresh ericaceous compost, and use chelated iron for immediate relief.

Blueberries need a soil pH of about 4.5 to 5.5, which is more acidic than almost anything else in a garden. That is why they are grown in ericaceous compost in pots in most of the UK, and why a season of tap water quietly ruins them.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the pattern.Yellow leaf blade with distinctly green veins, worst on the newest leaves at the tips. Older leaves stay greener. That pattern is iron unavailability, not a general shortage.
  2. Check what you have been watering with.Hard tap water is alkaline and raises the pH of the compost every time you use it. In a hard water area a potted blueberry can go from fine to chlorotic in one season.
  3. Test the compost pH.You are looking for 4.5 to 5.5. Anything above about 6 will produce chlorosis regardless of how much iron is present.
  4. Apply chelated iron for immediate relief.Sequestered or chelated iron is available to the plant even at higher pH. It greens the plant up within a few weeks but does not fix the underlying pH.
  5. Switch to rainwater permanently.This is the actual fix for a potted blueberry. A water butt beside the pots is the single change that keeps them healthy long term.
  6. Repot into fresh ericaceous compost.If the compost has been alkalised over a season or two, replacing it resets the pH. Do it in late winter before growth starts.
  7. Use sulphur chips to hold the pH down.Applied to the compost surface annually, they acidify slowly and counteract any drift. Useful where rainwater cannot always be used.
  8. Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser.General fertilisers often contain lime or raise pH. Use a feed formulated for ericaceous plants, applied at the label rate in spring and early summer.
  9. Mulch with pine needles or composted bark.Both are mildly acidic and keep the surface pH down while conserving moisture. Blueberries are shallow-rooted and dislike drying out.
  10. Rule out the other causes of yellowing.Uniform yellowing of older leaves is nitrogen. Yellowing with wilting is waterlogging. Only the green-veined pattern on new growth is iron.

Why does tap water harm blueberries?

Hard tap water is alkaline and contains dissolved lime. Every watering raises the compost pH slightly, and above about pH 6 the plant can no longer take up iron even though it is present.

Can I grow blueberries in the ground?

Only on genuinely acid soil, below about pH 5.5. Everywhere else the surrounding soil pulls the pH back up and the plant declines. A large pot of ericaceous compost works anywhere.

Will the yellow leaves go green again?

Partially, with chelated iron, but the reliable sign of recovery is that new leaves emerge fully green. Judge by new growth rather than existing leaves.
