Short answer
Everything goes to your Downloads folder by default, and every browser keeps a list of what it downloaded with a link to reveal each file in its folder. That list is the fastest route to a file you cannot find. You can change the destination in the browser's settings, or set it to ask each time, which is worth doing if you download a lot and file things properly.

- Open the browser's own download list first.Every browser keeps one, usually reachable from the menu or a keyboard shortcut, and each entry has an option to show the file in its folder. This finds a file in seconds even if you have no idea where it went.
- Know the default location.A folder called Downloads inside your user area, on both Windows and macOS. It appears in the sidebar of the file browser. Every browser and most applications use it unless told otherwise.
- Sort by date when you are hunting.Open the folder and sort by date modified, newest first. The file you just downloaded is at the top. This is more reliable than searching by name, because downloaded files are often named something you would not guess.
- Search by type if the name is unknown.Search the folder for the extension — pdf, zip, exe, dmg — which narrows a cluttered folder immediately. Turning on visible file extensions makes this considerably easier.
- Change the destination if it helps.In the browser's settings, either set a different folder or turn on the option to ask where to save each file. Asking each time is slower per download and saves far more time later if you deal with a lot of paperwork.
- Understand where attachments go.Opening an attachment directly from an email client puts it in a temporary location, and edits to it may not be saved anywhere you can find. Always save an attachment deliberately before working on it.
- Deal with the folder regularly.Sort by size and delete the installers, which are usually the bulk. Then sort by date and clear anything older than a few months. This is often several gigabytes and takes five minutes.
- Do not use Downloads as filing.It is a landing area. Anything you want to keep should be moved and named properly, because a folder of thousands of items with the browser's names is not something you will ever find anything in again.
If it doesn't work
Downloaded file cannot be found anywhere
Cause: Saved to a different folder, or the browser was set to ask and it was saved elsewhere — Fix: Use the browser's download list and its reveal-in-folder option. It records the actual path used.
Download disappeared immediately after completing
Cause: Security software quarantined it, or the browser blocked it as unsafe — Fix: Check the security software's quarantine and the browser's download list, which will say it was blocked. Do not override the block unless you are certain of the source.
Files download but will not open
Cause: Nothing installed that handles that file type, or the download was incomplete — Fix: Check the file size against what was advertised, and identify the type from its extension. Incomplete downloads are common on unstable connections and simply need repeating.
Downloads folder is enormous
Cause: Months of installers and attachments — Fix: Sort by size, delete installers for programs already installed, then clear anything old. It is one of the largest easy wins on a full drive.
Files download to the wrong drive and fill it
Cause: The browser's download location points at the system drive by default — Fix: Change it in the browser settings to a folder on the drive with space.

Is it safe to delete everything in Downloads?
Anything you have already installed or already filed, yes. Look for things you saved there and never moved — statements, tickets, photographs sent to you — before clearing it wholesale.
