What is wind rock and how do I stop it?
How repeated rocking opens a funnel around a stem that then fills with water and rots the collar, how to spot it before the plant dies, and the three-part fix that actually holds.

Short answer
A stiff stem in soft ground acts as a lever, and every gust grinds soil away from the collar until there is a funnel around it. Rain runs into the funnel and stands there, so the collar rots — which is how wind rock actually kills a plant, not by blowing it over. Fix it by heeling the socket closed while the ground is moist, topping it so water sheds away, and then removing the cause by shortening the top growth or staking low.
Wind rock is one of those problems that is obvious once described and invisible until then. It affects brussels sprouts, sunflowers, newly planted trees and shrubs, tall herbaceous plants, and anything top-heavy on soft or recently disturbed ground — and the damage it does is a water problem rather than a mechanical one.
Step by step
- Check the base of tall plants after every windy spell.Look at the soil immediately around the stem. A crater, a crack, a ring of loosened soil or standing water are all the same signal. This takes seconds and catches the problem while it is still fixable.
- Firm the socket closed when the ground is workable.Press the soil back against the stem with your heel, working around the plant. Do this when the ground is moist rather than sodden — treading saturated soil compacts and damages it.
- Top the collar so water sheds away.Add soil or grit so the surface slopes away from the stem rather than towards it. A collar that dishes towards the plant refills every time it rains.
- Reduce the sail area if you can.Shortening top growth on a shrub, or reducing a tall plant, reduces the leverage at the base directly. On a woody plant do it at the right season for that plant rather than in autumn.
- Stake low, not high.A single stake in the lowest third of the stem holds the base still while leaving the top free to flex. That is what you want, because a stem that flexes thickens and anchors itself; a stem held rigid does neither.
- Plant firmly in the first place.Most wind rock starts with a plant put into loose, freshly dug backfill. Firm the soil in layers as you fill the hole and tread it in around the root ball — not so hard that you compact the ground, but firmly enough that the plant does not move when you push it.
- Remove the stake once it has done its job.Usually after a couple of growing seasons. A permanent stake produces a plant that never develops its own strength and fails as soon as the stake rots.
Tips
- A stake tied high does not stop rock — it moves the pivot point up the stem and can snap the stem at the tie. Low is the whole point.
- Autumn-planted trees and shrubs are the most vulnerable, because they face a windy winter before they have anchored. Check them repeatedly through their first winter.
- Wind rock is far worse on light, recently cultivated and organic-rich soils, which hold a stem less firmly than a consolidated one.
- Earthing up around the base of tall brassicas is a traditional and effective answer, and it is easier than staking a whole row.
- If a mature tree is rocking with the root plate lifting, that is a different and serious matter — get an arborist rather than firming it in.
Common mistakes
- Watering a rocked plant that looks drought-stressed — The roots are torn and the collar is already sitting in water. More water accelerates the rot rather than relieving the wilt.
- Staking rigidly and permanently — The stem never flexes, so it never thickens, and the root system never develops the anchorage it would have grown. When the stake finally fails the plant goes over.
- Planting into loose soil and not firming — It is the origin of most wind rock. A plant that can be rocked by hand the day it is planted will be rocked by the wind for the rest of its first winter.
If it doesn't work
A visible gap or funnel in the soil around the base of a stem, often with water standing in it
Cause: The stem has been levering back and forth in soft ground and has ground the soil away from itself — Fix: Firm the soil back with your heel while the ground is moist but not saturated, then top the collar with soil or grit so water runs away from the stem rather than into it. Then deal with the cause.
The plant wilts or looks drought-stressed although the ground is wet
Cause: The fine feeding roots at the edge of the root ball are torn every time the plant moves, so it cannot take up water — Fix: Stabilise the plant first — firming and staking — and then give it a season to rebuild its root system. Do not respond by watering more.
Blackening or softening at the base of the stem after a windy winter
Cause: Rot at the collar, from water standing in the socket the rocking opened — Fix: Improve the drainage at the collar, keep mulch off the stem, and expect that a plant already rotted through at the base will not recover. Replant firmly and stake low.
Brussels sprouts producing loose, open 'blown' sprouts
Cause: Wind rock in loose soil, often combined with too much nitrogen — Fix: Plant brassicas firmly into consolidated ground rather than freshly dug fluffy soil, earth up the stems, and stake tall varieties on an exposed site.

Cause: The root ball is turning in the planting hole because the plant was staked high, staked not at all, or planted into loose backfill — Fix: Refirm, stake in the lowest third of the stem with a single low stake, and remove the stake after a couple of seasons once the roots have anchored.
