What is interfacing, and when do I need it?
Interfacing is a hidden layer that gives a part of a garment the stiffness or stability it cannot get from the fabric alone. Collars, cuffs, waistbands and buttonholes are where it matters.

Short answer
It is a fabric applied to the wrong side of a piece to add body, hold a shape or stop an area stretching. Fusible types are ironed on and suit most home sewing; sew-in types are tacked in and suit fabrics that heat or adhesive would spoil. Match the weight to the fabric, not to the job.
Interfacing is invisible in a finished garment, which is why beginners leave it out and then wonder why a collar flops or a buttonhole gapes. It is not a stiffener in the cardboard sense: a correctly chosen interfacing supports the fabric while behaving like it.
Step by step
- Know what it is for in each place.Collars and cuffs need body so they hold a shape. Waistbands need to resist stretching. Buttonhole areas need stability so the stitching does not distort. Facings need enough substance that they do not roll to the outside.
- Choose the weight from the fabric, not from the part.The interfacing should be the same weight as the fabric or lighter. Heavier interfacing dominates and the piece behaves like the interfacing, which is why a light blouse with stiff collar interfacing looks wrong.
- Decide between fusible and sew-in.Fusible is bonded with heat and is easier and faster. Sew-in is tacked or caught in the seam and is used where heat, adhesive or the fabric's texture rule fusing out — velvet, some silks, heavily textured or heat-sensitive cloth.
- Match woven, knit or non-woven to the fabric's behaviour.Woven interfacing has a grain and behaves like cloth. Knit interfacing stretches and suits jersey. Non-woven has no grain and can be cut in any direction, but it can feel papery on a soft fabric.
- Test on a scrap before committing.Fuse a sample, let it cool, then handle it. This is the only reliable way to know whether the combination behaves the way you want, and it takes two minutes.
- Fuse with heat, pressure and time, not by sliding.Press and hold in overlapping positions rather than ironing back and forth. Sliding shifts the interfacing and gives partial adhesion that bubbles later.
- Let it cool completely before handling.The bond sets as it cools. Moving the piece while warm is the usual cause of interfacing that lifts at the edges a few washes later.
- Trim it out of seam allowances where bulk matters.On thick fabric, cutting the interfacing back to the seam line removes a layer from the seam and gives a much flatter finish at collar points and cuffs.

Can I skip it?
You can, and the garment will still function. Collars will be limp, waistbands will stretch out and buttonholes will distort — those are the specific consequences rather than a general loss of quality.
Why has my interfacing bubbled?
Usually incomplete fusing — not enough heat, pressure or time — or the piece was moved before it cooled. It can also happen when a fusible was used on a fabric that could not take the temperature it needed.
