What is a wood router actually used for?

Short answer
A router spins a shaped cutter at very high speed and removes material to a set depth, guided either by a bearing on the bit, a fence, or a template. That lets it do four families of job: shape an edge, cut a slot or a recess of exact depth, trim one piece flush with another, and reproduce a shape from a pattern any number of times.
A router looks like a specialist tool for decorative mouldings and is nothing of the sort. It is the only common power tool that cuts to an exact depth rather than all the way through, and the only one that will make the fortieth part identical to the first. That is why it turns up in kitchen fitting, door hanging, worktop jointing, shelving and every kind of cabinet work.

Step by step
- Understand the basic action.A motor spins a cutter, called a bit, held in a collet. The router body rests on a flat base plate. How far the bit projects below that base is the depth of cut, and it is set mechanically and repeatably — that is the router's defining property.
- Job family one: shaping an edge.A bearing-guided bit runs along the edge of a board and cuts a profile into it — a round-over to soften an arris, a chamfer, a cove, an ogee moulding. The bearing follows the edge so no fence or measuring is involved.
- Job family two: cutting a recess to depth.A straight bit with a fence or a guide cuts grooves, housings for shelves, rebates for cabinet backs, mortises for locks, and the recess for a hinge. Nothing else cuts a flat-bottomed slot of an exact depth as cleanly.
- Job family three: trimming flush.A flush-trim bit has a bearing the same diameter as the cutter, so it follows the surface below and trims whatever stands proud of it exactly level. This is how laminate, edge banding and oversize panels are trimmed.
- Job family four: copying from a template.With a template and either a bearing-guided bit or a guide bush, the router reproduces the template's outline in the workpiece. Make one template and you can make fifty identical parts, or fifty identical hinge recesses.
- Know what a router cannot do.It is not a saw — it wastes far too much material and takes far too long to cut a board in two. It does not cut deep in one pass. It struggles on very small parts, which cannot be held safely. And it is poor at cutting anything containing metal.
- Know the two ways to use one.Hand-held, with the router moved over a fixed workpiece — the normal way for edges, housings and templates. Or mounted upside down under a table, with the workpiece moved past a fixed bit — far better for small parts, narrow mouldings and repeat work, and much safer for them.
- Start with the two easiest jobs.A round-over on the edge of a shelf and a rebate along the back of a cabinet teach the feel of the tool with almost nothing at stake. Do both on scrap several times before you route anything that matters.
Tips
- The router is the tool most transformed by a table. If you find yourself routing small or narrow pieces by hand, that is the signal to build or buy a table.
- A router leaves a surface off the cutter that needs almost no sanding if the last pass is light. Trying to take the whole cut in one pass produces a surface that needs a lot of work.
- Almost every router problem — burning, snatching, wandering — has one of three causes: too deep a cut, the wrong feed direction, or a blunt bit.

Do I need a router, or will a multi-tool or a chisel do?
For one hinge recess, a chisel. For a run of shelves with housings, or any repeated identical cut, a router is not a luxury — it is the difference between a day and an hour, and between parts that match and parts that nearly match.
Is a router dangerous?
It demands respect more than most tools because there is no guard over the cutter and it has enough power to pull itself along an edge. Understanding feed direction and depth of cut removes most of the risk, and a router table removes more.
Can a router cut through a board?
It can, in several passes with a long straight bit, and people do this for accurate curved parts. It is slow, noisy and wasteful compared with a saw, so it is reserved for cuts a saw cannot make.
