Why will my washing machine valve not turn off?
The small lever valve behind a washing machine seizes, passes or snaps, and each of those needs a different response. What to try, and what not to force.

Short answer
Turn it slowly — a quarter turn is its full travel and forcing it past the stop is what breaks them. If it turns but water still flows, the valve is passing and needs replacing. If it is seized, penetrating oil and gentle rocking sometimes frees it, but never lever it: a snapped appliance valve is an immediate flood.
Appliance valves are among the cheapest fittings in the house, live in a hot, cramped, forgotten space behind a machine, and are operated perhaps twice a decade. That combination is why they seize, why they weep, and why so many people discover theirs does not work at the precise moment they need it. The right approach is patience and knowing where the stopcock is.

Step by step
- Locate the stopcock before you start.Genuinely first. If the valve breaks, you have seconds, not minutes. Confirm you can reach and operate the internal stopcock before you put any force on anything behind the machine.
- Switch off and unplug the machine.Then ease it forward. Do not drag it — lift the front slightly and walk it out, so the feet do not damage the floor and the hoses are not stretched. Have towels ready for the drips from the waste hose.
- Identify the valve type.Most are a small quarter-turn lever valve, often with a red or blue handle, sometimes a self-cutting type clamped onto the pipe. Some are a screwdriver-slot service valve. Quarter-turn means exactly that: from fully open to fully closed is ninety degrees and no further.
- Turn it slowly and stop at the stop.The handle should end up across the pipe when closed and along it when open. Turn steadily and stop when it stops. Forcing a lever past its stop shears the spindle, and the valve then cannot be operated at all in either direction.
- Treat a seized valve with oil and patience.Penetrating oil around the spindle, half an hour, then gentle rocking a few degrees each way by hand. Repeat. Many free up. What never works is a spanner on the handle — the body is thin brass, often thinner than a stopcock, and it snaps.
- Test whether it has actually closed.Disconnect the machine's fill hose into a bowl, having closed the valve. A drip or a trickle means the valve is passing. Many appliance valves close well enough to slow the flow but not enough to stop it, which is not good enough to change a hose.
- Stop and isolate if it will not close.Close the main stopcock and do the job from there. That is the correct answer, not more force on the appliance valve. Then have the valve replaced while the water is off anyway.
- Deal with a self-cutting valve properly.Self-cutting or self-piercing valves clamp onto a pipe and drive a small cutter through it. They are widely sold, quick to fit and a well-known long-term problem: they seize, they leak, and they restrict flow badly. If you find one, the right move is to have it replaced with a proper tee and a service valve.
Tips
- Operate appliance valves once a year, closed and open again, at the same time as you exercise the stopcock. It is a two-minute habit that prevents this entirely.
- When a washing machine is replaced, replace the fill hose too. Braided hoses are a leading cause of household floods and they are cheap.
- Keep the space behind the machine reachable. A valve you cannot get to is a valve you cannot use.
- If both a washing machine and a dishwasher share the space, label which valve is which. Guessing at the wrong one wastes time.
If it doesn't work
Handle turns but water still flows
Cause: The valve is passing — a worn ball or seat, or debris on the seat — Fix: Replace the valve. Isolate at the stopcock and fit a proper quarter-turn service valve. They are inexpensive and it is a small job.
Handle will not move at all
Cause: Seized from years without use, and scale on the ball — Fix: Penetrating oil and gentle rocking. If it does not free with hand pressure, use the stopcock instead and replace the valve.
Handle snapped off
Cause: Too much force, or brittle brass — Fix: Close the main stopcock immediately. The valve now needs replacing and the pipework needs checking for damage where it was gripped.
Weeps from the spindle when moved
Cause: Disturbed packing on a valve that has not been operated for years — Fix: Often stops after being worked a few times. If it persists, replace the valve rather than living with a permanent weep behind a machine.
Flow to the machine is poor and the valve is a self-cutting type
Cause: The self-cut hole is small and has scaled or partly closed — Fix: A very common cause of a slow-filling machine. Replace with a proper tee and service valve — the improvement is usually dramatic.
Valve leaks at the joint with the pipe
Cause: A compression olive that has relaxed, or a self-cutting clamp that has loosened — Fix: A quarter turn on a compression nut may cure it. A leaking self-cutting valve should be replaced rather than adjusted.
Questions people ask
Can I fit a new valve myself?
With the water off at the stopcock and the pipework drained, replacing a compression service valve is within reach of a competent householder. If the existing one is a self-cutting type, the pipe it was clamped onto has a hole in it and needs a proper repair or a section replaced, which is a bigger job.
Are self-cutting valves ever acceptable?
They are widely sold and widely fitted, and they work — for a while. They restrict flow, they are a known failure point and most plumbers replace them on sight. If you are fitting a new appliance connection, use a proper tee and service valve.
Should I leave the valve closed between washes?
Some people do, as flood insurance, and it does reduce the risk from a burst fill hose. The trade-off is that a valve operated twice a day wears faster and one operated twice a decade seizes. Once a year is the sensible middle ground for exercising it.
