Short answer
Stop using it and switch that circuit off at the consumer unit. Warmth means resistance where there should be none — usually a loose terminal or a failing socket — and loose connections are a leading cause of electrical fires. This needs a qualified electrician.
A socket should be at room temperature. Anything warmer is telling you that electricity is meeting resistance somewhere it should not, and resistance produces heat.

- Unplug whatever is in it.First action. If the appliance is the cause, removing it stops the heating immediately. Handle the plug by its body, not the cable.
- Switch the circuit off at the consumer unit.Find the breaker for that area and turn it off. This is the only way to make the socket genuinely safe, and it should stay off until it has been inspected.
- Read the warning signs in order of urgency.Burning smell, smoke, scorch marks or a buzzing noise are emergencies. Brown or yellow discolouration is serious. Mild warmth under a heavy load is the least urgent but still a fault.
- Understand what causes it.A loose terminal screw behind the faceplate is the most common. Worn contacts that no longer grip the plug pins, an overloaded circuit, or a damaged plug or cable are the others.
- Check the plug as well as the socket.A warm plug with a cool socket points at the plug or the appliance. A warm socket with a cool plug points at the socket wiring. That distinction is genuinely useful to the electrician.
- Do not remove the faceplate.The terminals behind it are live unless the circuit is isolated, and the fault is usually exactly there. There is nothing useful to see that justifies the risk.
- Look at what has been plugged in.High-draw appliances — heaters, kettles, tumble dryers, chargers for tools — through an extension lead or a multi-way adaptor is a common cause. Each of those should have its own wall socket.
- Check for a loose fit.If plugs fall out or wobble, the contacts inside have lost their spring. A poor contact area concentrates current and generates heat, and the socket needs replacing.
- Take it seriously in an older property.Aluminium wiring, rubber-insulated cable, or a consumer unit without RCD protection all raise the stakes. If you do not know when the wiring was last inspected, this is the prompt.
- Get an electrician, not a handyman.Someone registered with a competent-person scheme. Replacing a socket sounds simple and diagnosing why it overheated is the actual job.
- Ask about an EICR while they are there.If one socket has overheated, the same installation conditions apply to the rest. A full inspection report is worth the cost at that point.
- Check your smoke alarms afterwards.An electrical fault that got as far as discolouring a socket is a reminder to test every alarm in the house.

- Warm socket, cool plug points at the socket. Warm plug, cool socket points at the appliance. Tell the electrician which.
- Plugs that wobble or fall out mean worn contacts, which is a heat fault waiting to happen.
- Switch the circuit off rather than just unplugging. A loose terminal is still live otherwise.

Cause: Arcing at a loose terminal — Fix: Isolate the circuit immediately. This is the most urgent version of the fault.
Warm only when a heater or kettle is plugged in
Cause: High load through a worn socket or an overloaded circuit — Fix: Still a fault. Have it inspected, and give high-draw appliances their own wall socket.
Plug falls out easily
Cause: Contacts inside have lost their tension — Fix: Have the socket replaced. Poor contact concentrates current and creates heat.
Burning smell with no visible mark
Cause: Overheating behind the faceplate — Fix: Isolate the circuit and call an electrician the same day.
