What is a frame fixing and when should I use one?

A single long sleeve and screw that goes through the item and into the masonry in one drilling operation — how it works, where it belongs, and the packing detail that keeps a frame square.

Short answer

A frame fixing is a long nylon or metal sleeve with a screw inside, designed so you drill one hole through the item and on into the masonry in a single pass. That removes any chance of the two holes being out of line. Use them for door and window frames, battens, subframes and gate posts — and always pack behind the fixing so tightening cannot bow the frame.

Fixing a frame with an ordinary plug and screw means drilling a clearance hole through the timber, marking through it, drilling the wall separately and hoping the two line up. Frame fixings exist because they usually do not, and because a misaligned fixing pulls a frame out of square as it tightens. The diagram shows the whole assembly in section.

  • A long masonry bit matching the fixing diameter
  • Rigid plastic or hardwood packers
  • A cable and pipe detector

Step by step

  1. Work out the length you need before buying.Frame thickness, plus the packing gap, plus the depth the fixing must reach into sound masonry — and remember plaster and render do not count as sound masonry. Buying short is the commonest error.
  2. Set the frame and pack it before drilling anything.Get the frame plumb, level and square with packers at each fixing position. The packers hold the geometry; the fixings only hold the packers in place.
  3. Check for services and drill in one pass.Detector first. Then drill straight through the frame and into the masonry with a single long bit at the fixing's stated diameter, without moving the frame.
  4. Drill deeper than the fixing is long.At least 10mm spare so dust has somewhere to go and the sleeve seats fully.
  5. Insert the sleeve fully, then drive the screw.Tap the sleeve in so its head is against the frame and the expanding section is entirely inside the masonry. Then drive the screw until it is firm.
  6. Stop as soon as it is firm.This is the step everyone gets wrong. Over-tightening a frame fixing with no packer behind it pulls the frame inwards, bows the jamb, and produces a door or window that binds or will not lock.
  7. Fix in the right positions.Near each corner but not into the very end of a brick, then spaced along each jamb. Never skip the hinge positions or the position behind the lock keep — those two carry the working loads.
  8. Check the frame is still square before you finish.Measure the diagonals and check the door or sash operates. Correct now by slackening and adjusting packers, not after the gaps have been filled.
  9. Foam or seal the gap afterwards, not instead.Expanding foam fills and insulates but is not a structural fixing, and expanding foam alone can push a frame out of square as it cures. Fix mechanically first.

Tips

  • Nylon-sleeved frame fixings are for general use; metal-sleeved ones carry considerably more and are what you want on a heavy external door frame or a gate post.
  • Hammer-in frame fixings drive with a hammer and set faster, but they are effectively permanent. Screw-in types can be undone, which matters on anything you may adjust.
  • Leave the packers in place permanently. They are what stops the frame deflecting when the door slams, not a temporary aid.

Common mistakes

  • Fixing a frame with no packers behind the fixings — Every fixing pulls the frame towards the wall by the width of the gap, twisting the jamb. Doors then bind at the top or bottom and locks stop engaging.
  • Using a frame fixing that only just reaches the brick — The expanding section has to sit in masonry. If part of it is still in the plaster it grips plaster, which has almost no strength.
