How do I use a mitre saw accurately?

Short answer

A mitre saw is accurate only as far as it has been set up. Most bad joints come from a fence that is fractionally out rather than from the cut itself.

Safety

Keep both hands well clear of the blade path and never cross your arm over the blade to hold a workpiece. Let the blade reach full speed before cutting and let it stop completely before lifting it — raising a spinning blade throws offcuts. Never cut freehand or hold short pieces by hand; clamp anything under about 300mm. Always wear eye and ear protection, and unplug before changing the blade.

Step by step

  1. Check the saw is square before you trust it.Set it to zero, cut a wide offcut, then flip one piece and put the cut edges together against a straightedge. Any gap is double the error.
  2. Square the fence to the blade.An engineer's square against the blade body, not the teeth. Adjust the fence rather than the blade where the saw allows it.
  3. Check the 45 degree stops too.Factory detents are frequently a fraction out. Cut two 45s and check them against a square — a mitred corner shows any error immediately.
  4. Fit the right blade.More teeth for finer cuts. Around 60 to 80 teeth for trim and mouldings, 24 to 40 for framing timber. A coarse blade on architrave tears the edge.
  5. Support long stock at bed height.Roller stands or a block of the same thickness. Timber that droops lifts off the bed mid-cut, which is why long pieces come out out of square.
  6. Hold the workpiece against the fence firmly.Flat on the bed and hard against the fence. Any gap behind the piece and the cut angle is wrong regardless of the saw setting.
  7. Clamp anything short.Under about 300mm, use the clamp. Fingers near a mitre saw blade is the injury this tool is known for.
  8. Cut on the waste side of the line.The blade has width — usually around 2.5mm. Cutting down the middle of the line makes every piece short by half a kerf, and it compounds across a run.
  9. Let the blade reach full speed first.Then bring it down steadily. Plunging into the wood at part speed causes kickback and a rough cut.
  10. Cut slowly through hardwood and mouldings.Let the blade do the work. Forcing it deflects the blade and produces a cut that is not square through the thickness.
  11. Let it stop before lifting.A spinning blade lifted out of the cut catches the offcut and throws it. This is the most common mitre saw incident after hand injuries.
  12. Use a stop block for repeat lengths.Clamped to the fence, so every piece is identical. Measuring each one separately guarantees they will differ.
  13. Cut mitres in pairs.For a corner, cut both halves at the same setting before changing anything. Any error is then symmetrical and much less visible.
  14. Scribe internal corners where you can.Walls are rarely at 90 degrees. For skirting, a scribed internal joint fits a wall that is out of square where a mitre will not.
  15. Check for splintering on the underside.A zero-clearance insert or a sacrificial fence backs up the fibres and stops breakout on the visible face.

Tips

  • Cut a test piece and flip it. It doubles any error and shows immediately whether the saw is square.
  • Always cut on the waste side of the line — the kerf is around 2.5mm and it adds up.
  • A stop block clamped to the fence is the only reliable way to get identical repeat lengths.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting the factory detents without checking — Mitre saw stops are frequently a fraction of a degree out, and a small error at each end of a joint doubles into a visible gap.
  • Lifting the blade before it stops — The still-spinning blade catches the offcut and throws it across the workshop, and it also spoils the cut face.

Mitred corners have a gap

Cause: Saw not square, or the wall is not 90 degrees — Fix: Check the saw against a square first, then measure the actual corner angle and split the difference.

Cut not square through the thickness

Cause: Blade deflecting, or stock not flat on the bed — Fix: Slow the cut down and check the piece sits flat with no packing under it.

Pieces all slightly short

Cause: Cutting down the middle of the line — Fix: Cut on the waste side of the line every time.

Splintered edges

Cause: Wrong blade or no backing — Fix: Use a higher tooth count and add a sacrificial fence or zero-clearance insert.

Repeat lengths inconsistent

Cause: Measuring each piece individually — Fix: Use a stop block clamped to the fence.
