What do the lights on my router mean?
The three things a router's lights are telling you, why the internet light is the only one that matters during an outage, and what each colour usually means.

Short answer
Routers show three separate things: power, the connection to the outside world, and the wifi it is broadcasting inside the house. Only the second one tells you whether the internet is working. A steady light is healthy; flashing usually means trying, and red or off means failed.
Every manufacturer uses different names and colours, but the underlying grammar is the same on all of them, and knowing it turns a panel of mystery lights into a diagnosis.
Step by step
- Find the power light.Usually first, often marked with a circle-and-line symbol. If it is off, the fault is the socket, the switch or the power supply — nothing else on the router matters until this is on.
- Find the internet or broadband light.Often labelled internet, broadband, WAN, DSL or a globe symbol. This is the connection to your provider, and it is the light that answers 'is the internet down?'.
- Find the wifi light.Often a fan or wave symbol, sometimes one per band. It only says the router is broadcasting a network. It can be perfectly healthy while the internet is completely down.
- Read steady as good.A steady light means the link is established. Steady with occasional flicker on the internet light is normal — that is data passing, not a fault.
- Read flashing as trying.A slowly flashing internet light usually means the router is attempting to sync with the line. Give it several minutes after a restart or a power cut before deciding it has failed.
- Read red, orange or off as failed.Colours vary by brand, but a light that has gone from white or green to red or amber is reporting a problem. On the internet light, that means the fault is the line or the provider.
- Check the ethernet port lights if a wired device is misbehaving.Small lights at the sockets on the back show whether a cable is connected and passing data. A dead port light with a cable in it means the cable, the port or the device — not the broadband.
- Photograph the panel while everything works.The fastest possible diagnosis later is comparing against a picture of normal. Keep it somewhere you can find without the internet.
Tips
- Router manuals and the provider's help pages list the exact colour meanings for your model — worth saving as a PDF on your phone, where it is readable during an outage.
- Many routers have a light-dimming or night mode. If lights have gone dark rather than failed, check that setting before panicking.
- A separate fibre box on the wall has its own lights. On full fibre, that box is where the line arrives; the router is the next link after it.
Common mistakes
- Reading the wifi light as 'the internet is fine' — It only says the router is broadcasting. Devices will connect happily to a network that has no connection to the outside world at all.
- Deciding a flashing light is a fault after thirty seconds — Lines take minutes to resync, especially after a power cut. Restarting again resets the clock and makes it look permanently broken.
If it doesn't work
All lights off
Cause: No power — Fix: Test the socket with something else, check the switch and any extension lead, and confirm the power supply plug is fully home at the router end.
Internet light red or amber, wifi light normal
Cause: The router cannot reach the provider — Fix: Check for a known outage using mobile data, reseat the line cable, restart once and wait five minutes. If unchanged, report a line fault.
Wifi light off but internet light fine
Cause: The wireless radio is disabled by a button or a schedule — Fix: Look for a wifi button on the case, then for a scheduled off period in the router's app or admin page.
Lights normal but nothing works
Cause: Usually a device-side or DNS problem rather than the router — Fix: Test a second device and a wired connection. If both fail, restart the router once; if only one device fails, work on that device.

Is it bad if the internet light flickers constantly?
No. On most routers, flicker on that light indicates traffic passing. What matters is whether it holds a steady base colour rather than dropping out or turning red.
Can I turn the lights off?
On many routers, yes — there is often a night mode or an LED setting in the app. It changes nothing functionally, but remember you have done it before diagnosing a problem later.
