Short answer
Mould in a home is worth removing promptly, and the moisture causing it matters more than the species. It most affects people with asthma, allergies or weakened immunity, and the colour is not a reliable guide to how harmful it is.
"Black mould" is a description rather than a species, and colour tells you very little. What matters is that persistent indoor mould means persistent moisture, and both the mould and the damp conditions are worth dealing with regardless of what is growing.
Safety
Step by step
- Treat it as a moisture problem, not a stain.Mould grows where there is water. Cleaning it without finding the source guarantees it returns, usually in weeks.
- Judge the scale before doing anything.A patch on bathroom sealant is a domestic cleaning job. Widespread growth, or mould coming through from behind a wall, needs assessing rather than wiping.
- Protect yourself before cleaning.Cleaning disturbs spores, which is the point at which exposure rises sharply. A particle mask, gloves, eye protection and open windows.
- Clean small areas properly.A dedicated mould cleaner or diluted household bleach on hard non-porous surfaces. Do not dry-brush it — that puts spores into the air.
- Find and fix the moisture.Condensation on cold surfaces, a leak, rising damp or simply not enough ventilation. The type of damp determines the fix.
- Reduce condensation as a habit.Ventilate while cooking and showering, keep lids on pans, dry washing outside where possible, and keep some background heat in cold rooms.
- Take repeated returns seriously.Mould that comes back after proper cleaning and better ventilation usually means a structural moisture problem that needs looking at.
Tips
- Porous materials that have gone mouldy — plasterboard, insulation, some fabrics — often cannot be cleaned properly and are better replaced.
- If you rent, report mould in writing and keep photographs. Landlords have obligations around damp and disrepair, and a written record matters.
- A hygrometer costs very little and takes the argument out of it. Sustained indoor humidity above about 60% is the condition mould needs.
Common mistakes
- Painting over mould — It grows through ordinary paint within weeks. Even mould-resistant paint only works once the moisture is dealt with.
- Sealing the room up to keep the cold out — Less ventilation means more condensation, which is exactly what the mould needs. Ventilation and heating work together, not against each other.
Questions people ask
Is black mould more dangerous than other mould?
Colour is not a reliable indicator. Any significant indoor mould growth is worth removing, and the moisture behind it is the thing that actually needs fixing.
Can mould make you ill?
It can trigger or worsen respiratory symptoms, particularly for people with asthma or allergies, and those with weakened immunity are more vulnerable. If you have symptoms you are concerned about, speak to a doctor rather than diagnosing from a website.
