What does dry clean only actually mean?
Sometimes it is a genuine warning about a fibre or a construction, and sometimes it is the manufacturer covering itself — knowing which is what saves money.

Short answer
A crossed-out tub means do not wash it at all, and that is usually real. A plain circle means professional cleaning, and that is often precautionary. Structure, linings, interfacing and dye stability are the real reasons; unlined simple garments in wool or silk can usually be hand washed.
Dry cleaning uses a solvent rather than water. It is used where water would shrink, distort, or dissolve something — a tailored jacket's canvas interfacing, an unstable dye, an adhesive-bonded seam. Where none of those apply, the label is often a default that the manufacturer applied to avoid claims rather than a physical necessity.
What you'll need
- The care label
- A gentle detergent (optional)
- A clean towel
Step by step
- Read the symbol, not just the words.A circle means professional cleaning is recommended. A circle with a cross through it means it cannot be dry cleaned. A tub with a cross means do not wash in water at all.
- Take a crossed-out tub seriously. That symbol is applied when water genuinely damages the item — leather, some viscose, structured tailoring, glued construction. This is not the label to ignore.
- Look at the construction.Linings, shoulder pads, canvas interfacing, boning and bonded seams all move independently when wet and set unevenly as they dry. Anything structured should be dry cleaned.
- Check the fibre against the risk.Unlined wool, cashmere, silk and linen usually hand wash well. Viscose, rayon and acetate are the ones that shrink dramatically and lose strength when wet.
- Test the dye before deciding.Dab a hidden seam with a damp white cloth. Colour on the cloth means water will move the dye, and that settles the question.
- Consider spot cleaning and airing instead. Most tailoring needs cleaning far less than people think. Brushing, airing and spot treatment handle most wear, and dry cleaning is hard on fabric.
- Hand wash cautiously if you decide to.Cool water, a gentle detergent, minimal handling, no wringing, pressed out in a towel and dried flat. Accept that you are taking the risk yourself.
- Use home dry cleaning kits for freshening only. The bags used in a tumble dryer deodorise and relax creases. They are not solvent cleaning and they will not remove real soiling.
- Tell the cleaner what the stain is.Solvent works on oil-based marks and poorly on sugar and water-based ones, which often need a separate wet treatment. Identifying the stain changes what they do.
Tips
- Dry cleaning is not gentle in the way people assume — the mechanical action is real and the solvent is hard on trims and adhesives. Do it when the garment needs it, not on a schedule.
- Take suits to be cleaned as a complete set, jacket and trousers together, so both fade at the same rate.
- Remove dry cleaning from the plastic bag as soon as you get home. The bag traps residual solvent and moisture against the garment.
Common mistakes
- Machine washing a structured jacket because the fabric is washable — The fabric is not the problem. The interfacing and canvas inside shrink at a different rate from the shell, and the jacket comes out rippled and permanently misshapen.
- Assuming every dry clean label is optional — For viscose, acetate, leather trims and anything with a crossed-out tub it is a genuine physical limit, and the damage from getting it wrong is not recoverable.
If it doesn't work
Garment shrank badly after a home wash
Cause: Viscose or rayon, which loses strength and shrinks when wet — Fix: Stretch gently while damp and dry flat. Recovery is limited and often partial.
Jacket rippled along the lapels and seams
Cause: Interfacing shrank differently from the shell fabric — Fix: A professional presser can improve it. Full correction usually needs the interfacing replacing, which is rarely worth it.
Colour ran when hand washed
Cause: Unstable dye — Fix: Rinse repeatedly in cold water and treat immediately with a colour run remover. Test the dye before washing next time.
Smell of solvent after dry cleaning
Cause: Insufficient airing at the cleaner — Fix: Remove the plastic bag and hang the garment somewhere ventilated for a day. Raise it with the cleaner if it persists.
Questions people ask
Can I wash a cashmere jumper marked dry clean only?
Usually yes, if it is unlined and simply constructed — cool hand wash, wool detergent, pressed out in a towel and dried flat. Many manufacturers label cashmere this way out of caution.
What is the difference between dry clean and dry clean only?
Practically, the strength of the recommendation. Neither symbol distinguishes them; the wording does. Dry clean only usually signals structure or an unstable fibre.
Are home dry cleaning kits any good?
For refreshing a garment that is not really dirty, yes. They deodorise and drop creases. They do not clean, and they will not remove a stain.
