The device shuts down suddenly at twenty or thirty per cent

Cause: The cell can no longer deliver current under load, regardless of what the percentage says — Fix: This is the clearest sign a replacement is due, and it is more meaningful than the health figure itself.

A laptop only runs while plugged in

Cause: A failed or disconnected battery, or a battery the machine has disabled — Fix: Have it checked. Continuing to use it plugged in is usually safe, but a battery the machine has disabled should be replaced rather than ignored.

Should I let it run flat occasionally to recalibrate?

Modern devices do not need it, and deep discharges add wear. The one exception is when a reading has clearly gone wrong, where a single full charge and discharge may reset the estimate.

Heat is the real variable rather than speed itself, and devices manage this deliberately. Fast charging a hot device in a case in the sun is the situation to avoid.
