Can I use pressure-treated timber indoors?

Short answer
You can, and in some places you should — timber against a damp wall, a sole plate on a solid floor, a garage or outbuilding frame, timber in a cellar or a crawl space. Everywhere else indoors it is unnecessary, more expensive, often wetter than kiln-dried stock and usually greener than you want. Never use it for food surfaces or anything a small child will handle.
This question usually arises because someone has treated timber left over from a garden job, or because the merchant only had treated stock in the size they wanted. The answer is more permissive than people expect, with two clear exceptions.

Step by step
- Use treated timber where internal timber is at risk of getting damp.A sole plate sitting on a concrete floor, battens fixed to a solid external wall, framing in a cellar, a garage or an unheated outbuilding, or joists in a suspended floor over a damp void. These are the internal situations where treatment earns its price.
- Skip it for ordinary internal studwork.A partition wall inside a heated house never gets wet, so treatment buys you nothing. Kiln-dried CLS or ordinary carcassing is cheaper, drier, straighter and easier to finish.
- Check how wet it is before you build it in.Treated stock is frequently still wet from the treatment vessel. Building wet timber into a heated house means it shrinks in place, opening joints and cracking plasterboard finishes. Let it acclimatise in the room first, as you would any timber.
- Accept the colour or plan to cover it.The green or brown dye shows through most paints and needs a stain-blocking primer to cover reliably. For anything visible, use untreated timber and finish it properly instead.
- Never use it for food contact or children's furniture.No worktops, chopping boards, bread bins, shelving in direct contact with unpackaged food, cots, toys or play furniture. This is the clear line, and there is no reason to cross it when untreated timber is cheaper anyway.
- Cut it with extraction and a mask.The dust carries preservative. Cut outside if you can, connect a vacuum if you cannot, wear a mask that fits, and vacuum rather than sweep afterwards.
Tips
- If the reason you are considering treated timber indoors is damp, deal with the damp. Timber treatment is protection against a residual risk, not a solution to water getting in.
- A damp-proof membrane strip under a sole plate does more to protect it than the treatment does, and the two together are the standard detail.
- Treated offcuts are still perfectly good for garden jobs, so there is rarely any need to force them into an internal use.
Common mistakes
- Building treated carcassing into a heated room straight off the delivery — It is often soaking. As it dries to the 8 to 12 per cent that a heated house imposes, it shrinks and twists, and everything fixed to it moves with it.
- Painting treated timber without a stain-blocking primer — The dye and any residual preservative bleed through emulsion and even through some undercoats, giving a patchy green tinge that gets worse rather than better with more coats.

Is it safe to have treated timber in the house?
In a structural or hidden role, yes — modern UK preservatives are fixed in the timber once dried and are widely used in internal construction where there is a wetting risk. The precautions that matter are about dust when cutting, and about not using it for food or child contact.
Is treated timber suitable for a loft conversion or roof timbers?
Roof and floor timbers are often specified as preservative treated, particularly where there is any risk of condensation or insect attack, and building control or the designer will state it if it is required. Treated timber there is normal rather than unusual.
Can I use it for a shed or workshop interior?
Yes, and it is often the right choice — an unheated outbuilding has genuine wetting and condensation risk. Just leave it to dry before you finish it, and use it for the frame rather than for benches you will work food or hands on.
