What is different about tiling over underfloor heating?

The floor moves as it heats and cools, so the adhesive, the grout and the movement joints all have to tolerate that. Ordinary materials in an ordinary layout crack.

Short answer

Use a flexible adhesive and a flexible grout rated for heated floors, leave the system off before, during and for as long afterwards as the products require, then bring it up slowly. Perimeter and intermediate movement joints matter far more than on an unheated floor.

A heated floor expands when it warms and contracts when it cools, every day, for years. Tile and adhesive are rigid, so that repeated movement has to go somewhere. Where the installation has not allowed for it, it goes into cracked grout, cracked tiles or tiles debonding — and the cause is almost never the heating itself.

Safety

Electric underfloor heating is an electrical installation. Connecting it, and any work in the consumer unit, is for a competent electrician. Never run a system to test it while it is uncovered or partly covered, and never screw or nail into a floor containing heating cable or pipework.

Step by step

  1. Establish which type of system you have.Electric mat or cable in the adhesive or screed, or wet pipework within a screed. The build-up and the depth over the element differ, and so does what you may fix into the floor afterwards.
  2. Leave the heating off well before tiling.A warm substrate shortens adhesive open time dramatically and can flash off the water the adhesive needs to cure. Systems are normally left off for a period before work starts.
  3. Use a flexible adhesive rated for heated floors.This is not optional and it is not the same as a standard floor adhesive. The classification is on the bag; if it does not say it suits underfloor heating, it does not.
  4. Get full coverage under every tile.Voids matter more on a heated floor, because the tile flexes over them with every heating cycle and eventually cracks. Comb properly and back-butter where the tile size calls for it.
  5. Use a flexible grout.Rigid cementitious grout in a floor that moves daily is the commonest reason grout cracks along the joints of a heated floor.
  6. Leave a perimeter movement joint and intermediate joints.The tiled field must be free to expand at its edges. That gap is filled with flexible sealant, not grout, and is normally hidden behind skirting or beading. Large or long areas need intermediate joints too.
  7. Wait the full cure time before switching on.Heating an uncured bed drives moisture out too fast and weakens it permanently. The adhesive and grout manufacturers both state a minimum, and it is usually longer than people expect.
  8. Bring the system up gradually the first time.Small increments over several days rather than straight to full output. The first heat cycle is the one most likely to crack a floor.

Common mistakes

  • Using standard adhesive and grout. — They are not formulated for repeated thermal movement, and the floor cracks along the joints or the tiles debond.
  • Grouting the perimeter gap. — It removes the only place the floor can expand into, so the expansion goes into the tiles instead.
  • Turning the heating on to speed up drying. — It does the opposite of helping: it drives water out of the adhesive before it has cured and leaves a weak bond.

Questions people ask

Can I drill into a floor with underfloor heating?

Not without knowing exactly where the cables or pipes run. Keep the installation plan and any photographs taken before the screed went down; without them, assume you cannot.

How long before I can use it?

As long as the adhesive and grout manufacturers state, which is a curing requirement rather than a convention. Rushing it is the one irreversible mistake in this job.
