How do I thin acrylic paint for an airbrush?

The milk-consistency rule and what it actually means, why the right thinner is not always water, and the ratio-and-pressure relationship that decides whether a coat lands smooth.

Short answer

Thin to roughly the consistency of milk — it should run off a stirring stick in a thin unbroken stream, not drip in blobs. Start around one part thinner to two parts paint for most model acrylics and adjust from there. Use the maker's own thinner or a proper airbrush thinner rather than plain tap water, and change one thing at a time.

Every airbrush problem gets blamed on thinning, and thinning is genuinely the second most common cause after a dirty nozzle. But the ratio on a forum post is worthless on its own, because paints differ enormously in how thick they start, the same brand varies between colours, and the pressure you spray at changes what viscosity works. What transfers is the target consistency, not the number.

Safety

Airbrushing acrylics is not a low-hazard alternative to solvent paint. It aerosolises pigment into particles small enough to reach deep into the lungs, and airbrushed lacquer or enamel adds solvent vapour on top. Spray into a booth extracted outside, or outdoors, and wear a respirator rated for particulates — and for organic vapour as well if you are spraying anything but water-based acrylic. Keep thinners and cleaners away from flames and out of reach of children.

Step by step

  1. Stir the paint thoroughly before you thin anything.Model acrylics settle hard. Pigment sitting at the bottom of the pot means you are thinning the medium above it and then wondering why the colour is weak. Stir until no colour streaks come up off the bottom.
  2. Aim for the consistency of milk, judged on the stick.Lift the stirring stick out. Correctly thinned paint runs off in a thin continuous stream. Too thick and it drips in fat blobs; too thin and it sheets off like water and will pool on the model.
  3. Start at about one part thinner to two parts paint.For most modern model acrylics that lands close. Some are pre-thinned and need almost nothing; some heavily pigmented colours need equal parts. Measure with a pipette so that when you find the ratio for a given paint you can repeat it.
  4. Use the right thinner.The maker's own thinner is formulated for that binder and is the safe answer. A general airbrush thinner works for most acrylics. Plain tap water thins the colour but also dilutes the binder and can leave a chalky, poorly adhering film, and hard water leaves deposits.
  5. Add flow improver rather than more thinner for tip dry.Flow improver reduces surface tension and slows drying at the needle tip without weakening the film. Retarder does the same more strongly. Both fix problems that people wrongly treat by over-thinning.
  6. Set the pressure to suit the paint, then leave it.Thicker paint needs more pressure, thinner paint needs less. Broad coats want more air than fine lines. Fix the pressure at a working figure, then adjust thinning to it — changing both at once tells you nothing.
  7. Test on scrap card before the model.One pass. Even and smooth means go. Grainy means too thin or too far away. Spidering means too wet. Spatter means a blocked nozzle rather than a thinning problem.
  8. Strain paint that has skinned.Bits of dried film in the cup block the nozzle instantly and are the reason a well-thinned mix suddenly spatters. A fine mesh strainer or a piece of old tights over the cup catches them.

Tips

  • Thin in a separate cup, not in the paint pot. Thinned paint in the pot goes off much faster and you lose the ability to mix a different consistency next time.
  • Metallics and some heavily pigmented colours have larger particles and want a bigger nozzle and slightly less thinning than a plain colour.
  • Write the ratio that worked on a sticker on the pot. You will not remember it in three months, and every paint is different.

Common mistakes

  • Thinning with tap water as standard — Water dilutes the acrylic binder as well as the pigment, so past a certain point the film has too little binder to hold together. It goes on translucent, dries chalky and rubs off when handled.
  • Over-thinning to cure tip dry — Tip dry is a drying-speed problem, not a viscosity problem. Thinner paint dries even faster at the needle. Flow improver or retarder is the correct answer.
  • Changing thinning and pressure together — You get a different result and no information. One variable at a time, with a test card between, finds the setting in minutes rather than an evening.

If it doesn't work

Paint sprays but the colour is weak and translucent

Cause: Over-thinned, or thinned with water so the binder is diluted — Fix: Mix a fresh batch with less thinner and build the colour in more coats rather than trying to get coverage in one.

Grainy, dusty finish

Cause: Too thin, sprayed too far away, or pressure too high — Fix: Move closer, drop the pressure, and add retarder so the droplets are still wet when they land.

Paint pools and runs on the model

Cause: Too thin for the pressure, or the trigger pulled too far back — Fix: Thicken the mix slightly and pull the trigger less. Keep the airbrush moving continuously.

Dried paint keeps forming on the needle tip

Cause: Tip dry, worse in a warm dry room — Fix: Add flow improver or retarder, drop the pressure a little, and wipe the tip with a damp cotton bud between passes.

Well-thinned paint suddenly spatters

Cause: A lump of skinned paint or dried pigment in the nozzle — Fix: Strain the paint, and strip and clean the nozzle. It is not a thinning fault.

Questions people ask

Can I airbrush paint straight from the pot?

A few paints sold as pre-thinned or airbrush-ready genuinely will. Everything else needs thinning, and trying to spray unthinned paint is the main reason beginners conclude their airbrush is faulty.

What pressure should I use?

Most model work happens somewhere in the low-to-middle part of a typical hobby compressor range — lower for fine lines and detail, higher for broad coats and thicker paint like primer or metallics. Find what works with your paint and note it.

Is isopropyl alcohol a good thinner for acrylics?

It thins many acrylics and dries very fast, which is useful for lacquer-like acrylics and awful for anything you need working time with. It can also make some paints brittle. It is a cleaner first and a thinner second.
