How do I stop a pergola or garden arch rocking and blowing over?
Telling a rotten post from a failed foundation from a frame that was never braced, and the retrofit fix for each.

Short answer
Push it and watch where the movement is. Movement at the ground with the frame square means the post base has failed. Movement in the frame with the posts still upright means it was never braced. Add knee braces at every post-to-beam junction and refix or replace the base — and on an arch, ground anchors or a proper footing rather than spikes.
Three separate faults produce the same symptom of a structure that moves, and each has a different fix. Working out which you have takes two minutes with a hand on the post, and it decides whether you are adding timber, digging concrete, or replacing a post.

Step by step
- Make it safe before diagnosing it.If the structure is leaning noticeably or a post is visibly rotten, prop it or guy it to stakes before doing anything else. A leaning pergola under a heavy climber can come down without warning.
- Push the frame and watch where the movement happens.Push firmly at beam height, sideways, and watch the base of each post and each corner joint in turn. Movement at the ground line with the frame staying square is a foundation or post failure. The frame going out of square while the post bases stay put is a bracing failure. Movement at a single joint is a connection failure.
- Probe every post at ground level.Screwdriver hard into the timber at ground line on all faces. Timber rots in the narrow band where water and air meet, so a post can be sound above and below and hollow exactly where it matters.
- For a bracing failure, add knee braces.Diagonal timbers from post to beam at 45 degrees, as long as you can reasonably make them, bolted at both ends into the post and the beam. Fit them at every post-to-beam junction and in both directions. This is the single most effective intervention on an unbraced frame.
- For a rotted post, replace it or spur it.Support the beam on a prop, cut the post out, and either fit a new full-length post into a galvanised anchor on a new pad, or bolt the sound upper section to a concrete repair spur set in concrete. A full replacement is better; a spur is quicker and is a recognised repair.
- For a failed foundation, rebuild the pad properly.A post set in a shallow or crumbling concrete collar, or standing on a paving slab, has no resistance to overturning. Excavate to firm ground, cast a proper pad, and set an anchor into it.
- On an arch, get it out of spikes and into the ground or a footing.Garden arches supplied with metal spikes are the classic blow-over. Spikes rely entirely on the top few hundred millimetres of soil. Replace with posts concreted into pads or anchored to a solid base, or fit ground anchors and guy the arch.
- Reduce the sail area if you cannot strengthen enough.A dense climber on an arch or pergola is a wind catcher. Thinning it, or opening the canopy, reduces the load the frame has to resist. On a marginal structure it can be the difference.
- Re-check the whole frame's connections.Once it has been moving for a season, every bolt is loose and every joint has worn. Go round and tighten or replace everything, and add fixings where a joint relies on too few.
Tips
- Braces look better if they are consistent — the same length and angle at every junction, with the ends cut to a matching profile.
- Make the braces as long as the design tolerates. A short brace is much less effective than a long one at the same angle.
- Coach bolts with washers under both the head and the nut, rather than screws, at brace ends. The joint sees reversing load every time the wind changes.
- Do this work before a climber gets established. Retrofitting braces through a mature wisteria is a genuinely unpleasant job.
- If the pergola came as a kit and has always moved, the kit is under-specified rather than badly assembled. Bracing and better foundations is the answer either way.
Common mistakes
- Adding more bolts at the existing joints — Racking is not a fixing failure, it is a geometry failure. A rectangle with pinned corners deforms however many bolts are in each corner. It needs a diagonal.
- Packing a loose post with wedges or rubble — It stops the movement you can feel and does nothing for the overturning resistance, which is what a gale tests. It also holds water against the post.
- Relying on the climber to hold it up — The climber is the load, not the support. A mature plant makes the structure heavier and catches far more wind.
- Leaving a rotten post because the structure still stands — It is standing on what is left of the section. Rot at the ground line fails suddenly and usually in the weather that loads it hardest.
If it doesn't work
The whole frame leans in one direction and springs back
Cause: No diagonal bracing — the rectangular frame is racking. — Fix: Knee braces at every post-to-beam junction in both directions. Nothing else fixes racking, and no amount of extra bolts at the existing joints substitutes for it.
One post moves at the ground while the rest are solid
Cause: That post's foundation has failed, or the post has rotted at ground level. — Fix: Probe it. Rot means replacement or a spur; a sound post that moves means the pad is inadequate and needs rebuilding.
The structure moves more after rain
Cause: The soil around a buried post or a spike softens and loses its grip. — Fix: This is a foundation that depends on soil strength. It needs a concrete pad, not a deeper hole.
An arch blows over in every gale
Cause: Spike or shallow foundations plus a large sail area from a climber. — Fix: Concrete footings or ground anchors, and thin the planting. Arches carry a surprising wind load for their size.
Questions people ask
Can I use a concrete repair spur on a pergola post?
Yes — it is the same technique used for fence posts and it works well, provided the spur is long enough, set in a proper concrete footing, and bolted to sound timber above the rot. Cut back well above the decay and use two bolts.
How much movement is acceptable?
Very little. A domestic pergola should feel rigid when pushed hard. Any visible deflection at beam height means the frame is relying on the fixings alone, and it will loosen progressively.
Do metal post spikes ever work?
For a light fence panel in firm ground, sometimes. For anything tall with a wind load — an arch, a pergola, a gate post — they do not have the depth or the resistance to overturning, and they are the commonest reason garden structures blow over.
