How do I stop a wooden frame or carcass racking?

Short answer
Racking is a rectangle folding sideways into a lozenge. Nothing you do to the joints alone fixes it as well as a triangle or a sheet. Glue and pin a plywood back into a rebate, let a fixed shelf in a housing brace the sides, add a diagonal, or use joints with real width across them like mortise and tenon. Screwed butt joints alone will always rack.
A wobbly bookcase, a shed door that sags into a diamond, a table frame that sways when you lean on it and a chair that rocks are the same problem. Four members joined at their corners have no inherent resistance to changing shape, because the joints are close to being pivots. Everything in furniture that stops it is either a triangle, a sheet, or a joint wide enough to act as more than a pivot.

- Recognise racking for what it is.Push the top corner sideways. If the whole assembly leans and the joints stay together, it is racking. If a joint opens, it is a joint failure. They need different fixes.
- The best answer for a carcass is a proper back panel.A plywood or hardboard back, glued and pinned into a rebate all round, converts a flexible box into a rigid one. It is the single most effective structural component in a cabinet, and it is why cheap cabinets with a thin back stapled to the rear edges wobble.
- Use a fixed shelf as a brace.A shelf housed into both sides and glued acts as a horizontal tie. One or two fixed shelves in a tall bookcase do far more for rigidity than any number of adjustable ones.
- Add a diagonal where a sheet is not possible.A gate, a shed door or an open frame needs a diagonal brace. It must run from the bottom of the hinge side upwards to the far top corner, so it works in compression — the other way round it works in tension and a timber brace is far weaker that way.
- Choose joints that resist rotation.A mortise and tenon, a bridle or a wide half lap resist racking because the joint has width and the glue surfaces act at a distance from the pivot. A single screw or a single dowel is a hinge.
- Widen the joint rather than adding fixings.Two dowels resist rotation, one does not. A wide rail into a leg resists more than a narrow one. Distance between fixings is what generates the resisting moment.
- Use a top rail or a corner block on a table frame.Corner blocks glued and screwed inside the leg-to-rail joint of a table triangulate each corner and hugely reduce sway. They are standard in commercial furniture for exactly this reason.
- Fix tall or top-heavy pieces to the wall.Any tall bookcase or chest should be strapped to the wall regardless of rigidity, because tipping is a serious hazard around children. A wall fixing also removes racking entirely.
Tips
- A back panel let into a rebate is dramatically stiffer than one nailed onto the back edges, because it cannot shear off the fixings.
- Two diagonals in an X give you a brace that works in either direction and lets you use a thinner section.
- If you cannot brace it, make the joints deeper. Increasing the height of a rail where it meets a leg increases racking resistance far more than increasing its thickness.
Common mistakes
- Adding more screws to a racking joint — Screws at the same location do not increase the lever arm. Rigidity comes from the distance between fixings and from triangulation, not from the number of fasteners.
- Fitting a brace running the wrong way on a gate — The brace must go from the bottom hinge corner up to the top of the closing side. Fitted the other way it is in tension, and the joints pull apart rather than pushing together.
- Relying on adjustable shelves for stiffness — A shelf sitting on pegs contributes almost nothing against racking. It needs to be housed and glued to act as a tie.

Is a plywood back really that important?
Yes. In a typical cabinet it is the component doing most of the work against racking, and it is why a flat-pack unit assembled without its back feels like a wet cardboard box. Rebate it in and glue it.
Why does my table sway when I lean on it?
The leg-to-rail joints are acting as pivots. Corner blocks, deeper rails, or a stretcher between the legs near the floor will all reduce it. Pocket screws alone in a table frame are a common cause.
