How do I start stargazing without a telescope?
Dark adaptation, learning a few signposts rather than everything, and why binoculars beat a first telescope.

Short answer
Give your eyes twenty minutes to adapt to the dark and use a red torch to keep that adaptation. Learn a handful of signpost constellations and use them to find everything else. Binoculars show far more than the naked eye and are the best first purchase.
The two things that most improve a night's stargazing cost nothing: getting away from direct lights, and waiting long enough for your eyes to adapt. Both are routinely skipped.

Step by step
- Let your eyes adapt.It takes about twenty minutes for full dark adaptation and one glance at a phone screen or a white torch destroys it. This is the single biggest difference between seeing a few stars and seeing thousands.
- Use red light only.A red torch, or red film taped over a normal one, and your phone on its dimmest red night mode. Red light preserves dark adaptation where white light does not.
- Get away from direct lights.You do not need a dark-sky reserve to start. Simply standing where no streetlight shines into your eyes, in a garden shadow or a park, makes an immediate difference.
- Check the moon phase.A full moon washes out faint objects almost entirely. For stars and the Milky Way go near new moon; the moon itself is a spectacular target around first quarter, when the shadows along the terminator are longest.
- Learn a few signpost constellations.In the northern sky, the Plough points to Polaris. Orion in winter and the Summer Triangle in summer anchor most of the rest. Learning three or four signposts gets you to everything else.
- Use a planisphere or an app.A planisphere is a simple rotating star chart set to date and time. Apps do the same and more, but keep the screen red and dim, or use the app indoors before going out.
- Start with the easy targets.The Moon, Jupiter and its four bright moons, Saturn's rings, the Pleiades, the Orion Nebula and the Andromeda Galaxy. All are visible with binoculars or the naked eye.
- Use binoculars before a telescope.10x50 binoculars show craters on the moon, the moons of Jupiter, star clusters and the Milky Way's structure. They are cheaper, easier and more useful than a beginner telescope.
- Brace the binoculars.Lean against a wall, sit in a reclining chair, or mount them on a tripod. Handheld shake is what limits what you can see far more than the optics.
- Use averted vision on faint objects.Look slightly to one side of a faint object rather than directly at it. The periphery of the eye is more light-sensitive, and faint galaxies and nebulae appear when you look away.
- Dress for standing still in the cold.Far warmer than for walking. Standing still on a clear night, which is when it is coldest, chills you very quickly.
- Never point optics at the Sun.Binoculars or a telescope aimed at the Sun cause instant permanent eye damage. Only purpose-made front-fitting solar filters make solar viewing safe.

Common mistakes
- Checking a phone with a white screen — One glance at a bright screen resets dark adaptation and it takes another twenty minutes to recover. Use red night mode at minimum brightness, or plan indoors before going out.
- Buying a cheap department-store telescope first — Low-end telescopes have wobbly mounts and poor optics, so finding and holding anything is frustrating. More people are put off astronomy by a bad first telescope than by anything else.

Cannot see many stars
Cause: Eyes not adapted, or a direct light source in view — Fix: Wait twenty minutes with no white light, and stand where no lamp shines into your eyes.
Cannot find anything with a chart
Cause: Not using signpost constellations — Fix: Learn the Plough and Orion first, and star-hop from them.
View shakes in binoculars
Cause: Handheld at high magnification — Fix: Lean against something, lie back in a chair, or use a tripod adapter.
Everything looks washed out
Cause: Moonlight or high cloud — Fix: Observe closer to new moon, and check a forecast for transparency as well as cloud.
Optics fog up
Cause: Dew forming as the temperature drops — Fix: Use a dew shield, and never wipe optics wet — let them dry indoors.
Questions people ask
Do I need a telescope to start?
No, and it is usually better not to. Learning the sky with the naked eye and binoculars means that when you do buy a telescope you can actually find things with it.
What can I see from a town?
The Moon in detail, the bright planets, bright double stars and the brightest clusters. Faint galaxies and nebulae need darker skies, but there is a lot to work with from a suburban garden.
