Do soundproofing paint, foam panels and thin acoustic mats actually work?
An honest assessment of the products marketed to householders for noise — what each one genuinely does, which ones do nothing for the problem people buy them for, and where the money is better spent.

Short answer
Foam panels and acoustic tiles absorb echo inside a room and do essentially nothing to stop sound passing through a wall. Soundproof paint does effectively nothing. Thin self-adhesive mats add negligible mass. What works is mass, decoupling, absorption in a cavity and airtightness — in that order, and none of it comes in a tin.
Two completely different problems are both called soundproofing. Reducing echo within a room — making it sound better — needs soft absorbent surfaces, and foam panels do that well. Stopping sound entering or leaving a room needs mass, isolation and airtightness, and foam panels do essentially nothing for it. Most disappointment comes from buying a product for the first problem to solve the second.
Step by step
- Separate the two problems before buying anything.Does the room echo, or can you hear next door? Absorption fixes the first. Only construction fixes the second. Nothing does both.
- Assess acoustic foam honestly.It works — for absorption. Open-cell foam wedges on a studio wall reduce reflections and make the room sound controlled. Stuck to a party wall to stop a neighbour's television, it is almost completely ineffective, because it has negligible mass and sound goes straight through it.
- Assess soundproof paint.A thick coating weighing a fraction of a kilogram per square metre cannot meaningfully change the mass of a wall weighing a hundred times that. The physics does not allow it to work, and independent evidence for the claims is absent.
- Assess thin self-adhesive acoustic mats.Mass-loaded vinyl and similar barrier materials are real products with real applications, but they work by mass and they need to be part of a build-up — hung as a limp layer, decoupled, and sealed. A thin mat stuck to a wall and then plastered over adds very little.
- Assess egg boxes and carpet on the wall.Both absorb a little at high frequencies and change how the room sounds. Neither does anything for transmission, and egg boxes are also a fire risk.
- Assess acoustic curtains and door seals.Heavy curtains genuinely help with a window, which is often the weakest element in an external wall, and door seals genuinely help because a gap under a door is an open air path. These two are cheap and worth doing.
- Assess acoustic plasterboard.It is denser than standard board and it does help — as one component. Fitted as a single layer screwed directly to the same studs as before, the improvement is modest, because the rigid path is unchanged.
- Spend in the order that the physics rewards.Seal every air path. Then add mass. Then decouple. Then fill the cavity with absorbent material. That order costs almost nothing at the first step and the most at the third, and the first step is skipped most often.
- Consider masking, seriously.A fan, a white noise source, or a radio at low volume raises the background level so that intrusive sound is less noticeable. It is not soundproofing and it works better than most of what is sold as soundproofing at that price.
Common mistakes
- Buying foam panels to block a neighbour's noise — They absorb reflections inside your room. Sound passes straight through them, because they have almost no mass.
- Believing a paint can soundproof a wall — Sound reduction through a partition is governed largely by mass per unit area. A paint film adds a trivial fraction of it.
- Adding mass while leaving the gaps — Air paths dominate. Sealing is cheap and comes first, and an unsealed treated wall performs barely better than an untreated one.
- Treating one surface of a room — Sound will use whichever path is easiest. A treated wall next to an untreated ceiling, floor and door gives a fraction of the expected result.
Alternatives
- Sealing air paths: Acoustic sealant round skirtings, door seals, filling service penetrations, putty pads behind sockets. Costs very little, is the first thing that should be done, and sometimes produces the largest single improvement.
- Adding mass: Additional layers of dense board. Real, predictable and modest — every doubling of mass buys a limited improvement, which is why mass alone rarely satisfies.
- Decoupling: Resilient bars, independent frames, staggered studs. The measure that produces improvements people actually notice, and the most disruptive.
- Absorption in the cavity: Mineral wool in a stud void or between joists. Cheap when the structure is open, impossible afterwards, and multiplies the effect of the other measures.
- Masking: Raising the background noise so intrusion is less audible. Instant, costs almost nothing, and genuinely effective for sleep.
Questions people ask
Is acoustic plasterboard a con?
No — it is genuinely denser than standard board and that is a real benefit. What is misleading is the expectation that a single layer of it, fixed the same way to the same studs, transforms a wall. It is one component of a system.
What about mass-loaded vinyl?
A legitimate material used properly, as a limp mass layer within a decoupled build-up and sealed at every edge. Stuck to a wall and covered over, it does far less than the price suggests.
What is the best value thing I can do?
Seal every air path you can find, fit a solid door with seals if the noise comes through a door, and put putty pads behind sockets in a party wall. All three are cheap and all three address the paths that dominate in most homes.
