Can I put a shelf above a radiator?

Yes, with at least 100mm clear above the radiator and preferably 150mm, and nothing on it that heat harms — no candles, vinyl, houseplants, electronics, photographs or anything in a sealed container. A shelf close above a radiator also deflects the rising warm air into the room instead of up the curtains, which is genuinely useful under a window.

This gets asked because the wall above a radiator is often the only clear wall in the room. The answer is yes with conditions, and the conditions come from two separate things: what the radiator needs to work, and what the rising column of warm air does to whatever sits in it.

Step by step

Leave the radiator its air.A radiator works largely by convection: cool air enters at the bottom and rises off the fins. It needs a clear path out of the top. At least 100mm above the radiator, 150mm if you can, and nothing overhanging that blocks the flow.
Keep the shelf shallow.A deep shelf directly over a radiator traps the rising air against the wall. Keep it no deeper than about 150mm if it is close, or move it higher if you need depth.
Think about what sits in the rising warm air.The air coming off a radiator is warm and dry and it goes straight up. That is bad for candles, which soften and bow. Bad for houseplants, which dry out. Bad for photographs, artwork and vinyl records, which warp and fade. Bad for electronics and batteries. And bad for anything in a sealed jar or aerosol.
Check what is behind the wall before drilling.The area around a radiator is one of the more likely places to find pipes, and they will be running vertically up from the floor to the valves. Scan the whole area, and be especially careful directly above each end of the radiator.
Plan the fixing for a hot dry wall.Plaster above a radiator is often drier and more friable than elsewhere and may have been repaired around old pipe runs. Test the fixing before loading it.
Consider the radiator shelf as a deliberate choice.A shallow shelf 50 to 100mm above a radiator, projecting a little further than the radiator, deflects the rising warm air away from the wall and out into the room rather than letting it run up behind a curtain and out of the window. Under a window with full-length curtains this is a real, if modest, improvement.
Keep the curtain out of it either way.Curtains hanging over a radiator send most of its output up the glass. Either the curtain clears the radiator, or a shelf deflects the air out beneath it.

Tips

If the shelf is deliberately a heat deflector, it wants to project 20 to 30mm beyond the front face of the radiator and be as close above it as the valves and the wall allow.
Anything you would not leave on a sunny windowsill should not go above a radiator either.
Check the shelf position lets the radiator's bleed valve and thermostatic head still be reached with a hand and a key.

Common mistakes

Putting a deep shelf right on top of a radiator — It caps the convection and reduces the heat the radiator gives the room, while quietly baking whatever is on the shelf.
Standing candles or houseplants there — Both fail in the same week. Candles bow and drop, and plants dry to nothing however often they are watered.
Drilling above a radiator without scanning — Pipe runs to radiator valves are usually vertical and in exactly that zone. A drilled pipe behind plaster is an expensive discovery.

If it doesn't work

The room feels colder since the shelf went up

Cause: Convection blocked — the shelf is too deep or too close and it is capping the radiator — Fix: Raise the shelf, reduce its depth, or turn it into a proper deflector shelf that projects past the front of the radiator rather than sitting flat over it.

Things on the shelf keep warping or drying out

Cause: They are sitting in the rising warm air column — Fix: Move heat-sensitive items elsewhere. This is not fixable by adjusting the shelf.

Marks appearing on the wall above the shelf

Cause: Warm air carrying dust up the wall and depositing it — Fix: Normal above any heat source. Wipe periodically; a deflector shelf projecting further out reduces it.

Does a radiator shelf actually save energy?

It makes a small difference on an external wall under a window with long curtains, by pushing warm air out into the room rather than up the glass. It is worth doing when a shelf is going up anyway; it is not worth doing on its own as an energy measure.

Can I put a TV above a radiator?

Better not. The rising warm air runs straight into the vents and shortens the life of the electronics, and the mounting position usually puts the screen too high for comfortable viewing anyway.
