How wide and how deep should a sealant joint be?
The geometry that lets a bead stretch — roughly twice as wide as it is deep, bonded to two faces and not three — and why almost every split bead breaks this rule.

Short answer
Aim for a bead about twice as wide as it is deep, bonded only to the two facing sides of the joint. Use a closed-cell backer rod or a bond-breaker tape behind it so it cannot stick to the back. A bead stuck to three faces cannot stretch and tears down the middle; a bead smeared thinly across the face has nothing to stretch and peels off in a strip.
Sealant works by stretching. That is the whole mechanism: the joint opens, the bead gets longer and thinner, the joint closes, the bead recovers. Everything about joint geometry is arranged to make that possible, and the two commonest failures — a split down the middle and a peel along one edge — are both geometry failures rather than product failures.

Step by step
- Measure the widest point of the joint.Joints are rarely parallel. Measure at the worst point, because that is where the bead has to work hardest and where it will fail first.
- Aim for a width-to-depth ratio of about two to one.Wide enough to have material to stretch, shallow enough that the whole section cures and that the bead is not stiff in the direction it has to move. A very deep, narrow bead is stiff, slow to cure and prone to splitting.
- Bond to two faces only.The bead must be free at the back. If it is stuck to the back of the joint as well as the sides it cannot stretch — it can only tear — and it will split down the middle at the first cold snap. This is the single most common cause of a bead splitting.
- Fit closed-cell backer rod to set the depth.Choose a diameter about a quarter larger than the gap so it compresses slightly and stays put without adhesive. Push it in with a blunt tool to a consistent depth, so the finished bead has the right thickness all along. Closed cell only — open-cell foam absorbs water.
- Use bond breaker tape where the joint is too shallow for rod.A strip of polythene or PTFE tape laid along the back of a shallow joint stops the sealant bonding there. It does the same job as rod where there is no room for rod.
- Do not try to fill a very wide gap with sealant.Above roughly twenty millimetres, a bead has too much unsupported material and will sag, split or shrink whatever you do. Close the gap mechanically first with a trim, a batten, a filler piece or a mortar fillet, and then seal the remaining joint at a sensible width.
- Cut the nozzle to the width of the joint, not larger.The bead should fill the joint rather than sit on top of it. A nozzle cut too wide makes a fat bead resting on the surface with no depth in the joint at all — which is the smeared-over-the-face failure.
- Tool it into positive contact with both faces.One firm pass with a shaped tool, leaving a shallow concave surface. This is what actually presses the sealant against the sides — an untooled bead often has voids along both edges and is bonded along only part of its length.
Tips
- Backer rod is sold by diameter across a wide range. Buy a couple of sizes rather than trying to make one fit — a rod that is too small falls through and one that is far too big distorts the joint.
- A concave bead surface is stronger than a flat or convex one, because it puts the sealant in even tension when the joint opens instead of concentrating the stretch at the thin edges.
- Where the joint width varies a lot, use rod in the wide sections and let the bead narrow naturally at the ends rather than making the whole run the width of the worst point.
- For a joint you know moves a great deal, opening it up deliberately to a wider gap and sealing it properly outlasts sealing a narrow gap perfectly.
- If a joint has failed twice in the same way, measure it before buying anything. The geometry is almost always the reason.
If it doesn't work
The bead has split cleanly down the middle
Cause: Three-sided adhesion — the sealant is stuck to the back of the joint and cannot stretch — Fix: Cut it all out, clean back, fit backer rod or bond breaker tape, and reseal at about a two to one width-to-depth ratio.
The bead has peeled away along one edge in a strip
Cause: Adhesion failure at that face, or a bead with too little depth in the joint — Fix: Remove it completely, clean and degrease both faces, and reseal with the nozzle cut to fill the joint rather than sit on it.
The bead sags or slumps in a wide gap
Cause: Too much unsupported sealant — Fix: Close the gap mechanically with a trim or filler piece, then seal the remaining narrow joint.
The bead is still soft deep in the joint months later
Cause: A very deep section of a moisture-curing sealant — Fix: Rake it out and refit with backer rod so the section is a sensible depth. Moisture-curing sealants cure from the surface inwards.
Questions people ask
What is the correct width to depth ratio for sealant?
Roughly two to one — twice as wide as it is deep — for most movement joints. That gives enough material to stretch without being so thick that the section cannot cure or is too stiff to move.
What is backer rod for?
Two things: it sets the depth of the bead, and it stops the sealant bonding to the back of the joint. The second is the important one, because three-sided adhesion is what splits beads.
Can I use anything instead of backer rod?
Bond breaker tape works in a shallow joint. Rolled polythene or closed-cell draught strip will do at a push. Do not use open-cell foam, newspaper or rope, all of which hold water against the joint.
How wide is too wide for sealant?
Above roughly twenty millimetres a bead becomes unreliable regardless of product. Close the gap mechanically and seal a sensible joint instead.
