Why is my computer screen flickering?
One test tells you whether a flickering screen is software or hardware in about thirty seconds. What it is, and what each answer means.

Short answer
Open Task Manager on Windows and watch the screen: if Task Manager flickers along with everything else, the cause is a display driver; if it stays steady while the rest flickers, the cause is an application. On any machine, plugging in an external monitor separates the screen and its cable from everything behind it — if the external display is clean, the panel or its cable is at fault.
Flicker has an unusually clean diagnostic path because the layers are separable. Either the whole display pipeline is flickering, which points at the driver or the hardware, or only some of what is drawn on it is, which points at an application. The Task Manager test exploits the fact that Task Manager is drawn by a different mechanism from ordinary application windows, so its behaviour distinguishes the two. Adding an external monitor then separates the physical panel from the graphics hardware. Between them, those two tests cover almost every case.
Step by step
- Do the Task Manager test on Windows.Press Ctrl, Shift and Escape to open Task Manager and leave it visible. If Task Manager flickers along with everything else, suspect the display driver. If Task Manager alone stays stable while everything around it flickers, suspect an application — often one that overlays the screen, such as a screen recorder, a colour management tool or an older antivirus.
- Connect an external monitor.This is the equivalent test on any machine including a Mac. If the external display is completely stable while the built-in one flickers, the panel, its backlight or its internal cable is at fault. If both flicker identically, the graphics hardware or driver is.
- Check the refresh rate.In display settings, confirm the refresh rate matches what the monitor supports. A mismatch, or a rate set too high for the cable, produces flicker and blackouts. This is common after connecting a new monitor or a new cable.
- Try a different cable and a different port.Display cables fail more often than people expect, particularly cheap HDMI and USB-C cables carrying high resolutions. Swapping the cable is a two-minute test that resolves a surprising proportion of external-monitor flicker.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver.If the flicker began after an update, rolling the display driver back is the direct test. If it has been going on for a while, updating to the manufacturer's current driver — from the graphics chip maker or the laptop manufacturer, not from a generic source — is the right move.
- Move the laptop lid and watch.If the flicker changes as you open and close the lid, or appears at a specific angle, that is the internal display cable running through the hinge. It is a mechanical fault and no software change will help.
- Rule out interference and power.A desk lamp or a monitor on a failing power supply can cause flicker, as can a badly overloaded extension lead. Try the monitor on a different socket, and note whether the flicker correlates with anything else switching on.
- Consider the panel's own backlight on older screens.A flicker that is worse when cold and settles after a few minutes, on an older monitor, usually points at ageing backlight components. On a monitor that is out of warranty this is generally the point to replace rather than repair.
Common mistakes
- Reinstalling the operating system before doing the external monitor test — The test takes two minutes and definitively separates hardware from software. A reinstall does nothing for a failing panel cable.
- Buying a new monitor before changing the cable — Cables are the most common failure in a display chain and the cheapest thing to eliminate.
If it doesn't work
Only one application flickers
Cause: Hardware acceleration in that application — Fix: Turn off hardware acceleration in the application's settings. Browsers and messaging apps commonly offer this, and it resolves flicker that only appears in one window.
Flicker started after a Windows update
Cause: Display driver replaced — Fix: Roll the display driver back through Device Manager, or install the manufacturer's driver directly. Then set Windows not to update that driver automatically if the problem recurs.
External monitor flickers, laptop screen is fine
Cause: Cable, port, refresh rate or the monitor itself — Fix: Change the cable first, then the port, then the refresh rate. Only then suspect the monitor.
Screen flickers and goes black briefly, repeatedly
Cause: The graphics driver crashing and recovering — Fix: Windows logs this — look for display driver stopped responding and has recovered in Event Viewer. It usually means a driver problem or an overheating graphics chip.
Flicker only when the laptop is on battery
Cause: Adaptive brightness or a power-saving display setting — Fix: Turn off adaptive brightness and any panel self-refresh or power-saving display option in the graphics control panel.
Horizontal lines or coloured bands rather than flicker
Cause: Panel or graphics hardware fault — Fix: The external monitor test resolves which. Lines that appear on an external display too point at the graphics hardware, which on a laptop is usually not repairable separately.
Questions people ask
Can a flickering screen damage my eyes?
It will not cause lasting damage, but visible flicker is a well-established cause of eyestrain and headaches, so it is worth fixing rather than living with. Some people are also sensitive to the invisible flicker of certain screen backlights, which is a separate issue often described as PWM flicker.
Why does it only happen sometimes?
Intermittent flicker usually points at something physical — a cable moving, heat, or a connection working loose — or at an application that is only occasionally running. Noting exactly what is on screen and what the machine is doing when it happens narrows it quickly.
Is it worth repairing a laptop screen?
Often yes, since replacement panels for common models are widely available and the job is routine for a repair shop. The internal cable is usually cheaper again. Get a quote before assuming the machine is finished.
