Can I use an old laptop's drive as an external drive?

Usually yes, and it is the cheapest external drive you will ever own. What you need to buy, how to tell which kind of drive you have, and when it is not worth it.

Identify the drive first: a 2.5-inch SATA drive needs a cheap USB caddy, an M.2 SSD needs an M.2 enclosure matching its type, and a drive soldered to the board cannot be removed at all. Buy the enclosure for the specific type, transfer the drive, then format it fresh unless you need the old contents. A recovered mechanical laptop drive makes a decent scratch or secondary backup drive; it is too old to be your only backup.

Laptop internals include sharp edges and fragile ribbon connectors, and a drive removed from a machine that was working may still hold personal data in a fully readable state — treat it as sensitive until you have wiped it.   1. Find out what kind of drive it is.Look up the model's specification, or open the service hatch. A 2.5-inch drive is a flat metal box the size of a pack of cards. An M.2 drive is a bare stick of circuit board held by a single screw. Some thin laptops and all recent Apple laptops have storage soldered to the mainboard and there is nothing to remove.
  2. Check whether the M.2 drive is SATA or NVMe.M.2 sticks come in both, they look similar, and the enclosures are not interchangeable — though some enclosures support both. The notches in the edge connector are the giveaway, and the model number will tell you outright. Buying the wrong enclosure is the standard mistake.
  3. Remove it carefully.Power off, unplug, remove the battery if it comes out, and work on a hard surface. Undo the retaining screw or bracket, slide a SATA drive out of its connector in line, and lift an M.2 stick at the shallow angle it springs to once its screw is out. Do not force anything.
  4. Buy the matching enclosure.A 2.5-inch SATA caddy is inexpensive and needs no power supply. An M.2 NVMe enclosure costs more, gets warm in use, and should be bought on its stated interface speed. Metal enclosures dissipate heat better than plastic and it matters for NVMe.
  5. Decide what to do with the contents.If you want the old files, connect it and copy them off before doing anything else. If you do not, format it fresh so you are not carrying an old operating system and someone's personal data around in a bag.
  6. Format it for how you will use it.One platform only: use that platform's native format. Moving between Windows and Mac: exFAT. Then label the drive physically, because unlabelled drives accumulate.
  7. Judge whether it is worth trusting.A five-year-old mechanical drive from a laptop that was replaced because it was slow is a scratch drive, not a backup. Check its health data and its power-on hours. An SSD from a lightly used machine is a genuinely good buy at nothing.
  8. Wipe it properly if the laptop is leaving the house.If you are selling or recycling the machine and keeping the drive, that is the safest arrangement. If the drive goes with it, wipe it or physically destroy it — a deleted user account is not a wipe.

If it doesn't work

Drive is not detected in the caddy

Cause: Wrong enclosure type, insufficient power, or the drive has failed — Fix: Check the interface matches. For a mechanical drive on a laptop port, try a different port or a Y-cable that draws power from two ports. Then test the drive in another machine to confirm whether it is the drive or the caddy.

Drive shows as unallocated or asks to be initialised

Cause: It was in a different platform's format, or the partition table is not recognised — Fix: If you want the old data, stop and read it with software that understands the other platform's format. If you do not, initialise and format it.

NVMe enclosure gets very hot and disconnects

Cause: Thermal shutdown, common in cheap plastic enclosures — Fix: Use a metal enclosure with a thermal pad, and avoid sustained large transfers in an unventilated bag.

Windows shows the drive but says access denied

Cause: The folders carry permissions tied to the old user account — Fix: Take ownership of the folder, which the system offers to do. On a Mac, ignore ownership on the volume in its information panel.

Questions people ask

Is it worth doing for a mechanical drive?

For a spare drive to shuttle files around, yes. As a backup, only as an extra copy alongside a newer one — you are relying on hardware that is already past the safe half of its life.

Can I put the old drive in a new laptop?

Only if the interface matches, and in most modern thin laptops there is one slot already occupied. Some have a spare slot; the service manual will say.

What if the old laptop will not turn on?

That is the best reason to do this. A dead mainboard does not mean a dead drive, and pulling the drive is often the cheapest way to recover everything on a laptop that has stopped working.
