How do I restore an old hand tool?

Short answer
Clean rather than strip. Remove rust with a light abrasive or a citric acid soak, flatten and sharpen the cutting edge, and treat the handle with oil. Repainting and polishing an old tool to look new usually reduces both its value and its character.
Restoring a tool is mostly about deciding what to leave alone. The goal is a working tool, not a shiny one.

Step by step
- Assess before starting.Is the steel sound, is the handle intact, are there cracks in the casting? A cracked plane body or a split socket is often not worth the work.
- Do not over-restore.Patina on an old tool is not damage. Stripping and repainting a vintage tool usually reduces its value substantially, and japanning is very hard to replicate.
- Dismantle and photograph.Take it apart, laying the parts out in order and photographing as you go. Old tools have adjustment parts that are not obvious on reassembly.
- Remove rust gently first.Fine wire wool with oil takes surface rust off without touching the underlying steel. Start here before anything more aggressive.
- Use citric acid for heavy rust.A soak in citric acid solution for a few hours dissolves rust without attacking sound steel. Rinse, dry immediately and oil, or it will flash rust within minutes.
- Avoid aggressive grinding.A wire wheel or grinder removes rust fast and also removes stamps, sharp arrises and the tool's history. It is very easy to overdo.
- Never overheat a cutting edge.If steel turns blue while grinding, that section has lost its hardness permanently and must be ground back past it. Cool frequently in water.
- Flatten before sharpening.For a chisel or plane iron, flatten the back on a coarse stone until it is uniformly flat near the edge. Then work the bevel. Skipping this means the tool never takes a proper edge.
- Flatten a plane sole if needed.On abrasive paper stuck to a known flat surface, with the tool assembled and tensioned. Only the areas around the mouth and the ends genuinely need to be flat.
- Treat the handle.Clean, light sanding only if necessary, then boiled linseed oil. A handle worn smooth by a previous owner's hand is worth keeping rather than sanding away.
- Protect it afterwards.Oil on the metal, stored somewhere dry. A restored tool left in a damp shed rusts again within a season.
- Use it.A restored tool that gets used stays in condition. Tools deteriorate faster sitting unused than being worked with and wiped down.

Common mistakes
- Stripping and repainting a vintage tool — Original japanning and patina are a large part of what makes an old tool valuable and characterful. It cannot be put back, and a repainted tool is generally worth substantially less.
- Grinding an edge on a dry wheel without cooling — The steel overheats and turns blue, which means the temper has been drawn and the hardness is gone permanently. That section will never hold an edge again.
If it doesn't work
Rust returned within days
Cause: Not dried and oiled after acid treatment — Fix: Rinse, dry immediately with heat if possible, and oil straight away.
Chisel will not take an edge
Cause: Back not flat, or steel overheated previously — Fix: Flatten the back properly. If a previous owner blued it, grind back past the affected steel.
Plane chattering
Cause: Sole not flat, or loose cap iron — Fix: Check the sole around the mouth and ensure the cap iron sits tight against the blade.
Handle loose
Cause: Timber shrunk — Fix: Re-wedge properly. Never soak it in water, which rots the wood and loosens it further afterwards.
Screws seized
Cause: Rust in the threads — Fix: Penetrating oil and patience. Use a correctly fitting driver — old screws have wide flat slots and modern drivers chew them.

Should I repaint an old plane?
Generally not. Original japanning is part of the tool's value and character, and reproducing it convincingly is difficult. Clean it, sharpen it and use it instead.
What is the best way to remove rust?
