How do I stop a salesperson rushing me into a decision?

Short answer
Say one sentence and mean it: "I do not make decisions on the day. Send it to me in writing and I will come back to you." A genuine offer survives that; a manufactured one does not, which is exactly the information you needed. At your door or on the phone, you can simply end the conversation.
Time pressure works because it prevents the two things that protect you: checking the facts, and thinking without an audience. That is why the same techniques recur everywhere — the discount that expires today, the manager consulted for a special price, the survey that reveals urgent work, the offer available only to the first callers. Recognising them is useful; having a single rehearsed response is far more useful, because in the moment you will not want to improvise.

Step by step
- Have one sentence ready and use it every time."I do not make decisions on the day." Rehearse it. You do not need a reason, and offering one invites a rebuttal, which is what the conversation is designed to produce.
- Ask for it in writing. The full price, everything included, the terms, and how long it stands. Legitimate suppliers write things down as a matter of course. A refusal, or a written version that differs from what was said, has told you everything.
- Recognise the standard techniques.A deadline that exists only in the conversation. A discount contingent on signing now. A price approved by a manager. A free survey that finds urgent problems. Bundled extras added at the end. None of them is illegal, and all of them are designed around your not having time.
- Leave, or end the call. You can stand up and walk out of any showroom, and you can end any phone call without explanation. If you are at home, you do not have to let anyone in and you can close the door.
- Get a second quote before agreeing to anything substantial. This single step defuses most doorstep and cold-call pricing, because those prices depend on there being no comparison. Two quotes also tell you what the work actually involves.
- Know that cancellation rights exist for exactly this.Contracts agreed at your home or away from a trader's premises, and most distance contracts, carry a cancellation period under consumer contracts regulations. Check the current rules for your situation and cancel in writing within the period if you need to.
- If it is your door and you did not invite them, treat it as a scam until proven otherwise.Do not agree to any work, do not hand over payment details, and check any claimed identity independently using a number you found yourself rather than one they gave you.
Tips
- The pressure often lands at the end, when you are tired and think the decision is made — add-ons, warranties, finance and insurance are sold at the till for that reason.
- "I need to discuss it with someone" is an effective and honest response even when you do not, because it removes you as the person who can say yes.
- Record the name, company and time. A supplier that objects to being written down has told you something useful.
Common mistakes
- Arguing about whether the deadline is real — It puts you inside a conversation designed by the other person. Declining to decide today needs no argument and cannot be rebutted.
- Signing to end an uncomfortable conversation — It is the intended outcome of the discomfort. Leaving is always available and costs nothing but a moment of awkwardness.
Questions people ask
What if the discount really does expire?
Then you lose a discount, which is a small and known cost. Set against a rushed commitment on something you have not checked, it is a good trade almost every time — and the offer usually reappears.
I already signed under pressure. What now?
Check immediately whether a cancellation period applies, which it commonly does for contracts agreed at home or at a distance. Cancel in writing within the period and keep proof. Citizens Advice can tell you what applies to your situation.
