Can I replace a socket with a USB socket?

Short answer
In an ordinary room, yes — it is a like-for-like accessory replacement on an existing circuit and is not notifiable in England and Wales. The practical constraints are back box depth, because USB modules are deep, and charging output, because most fixed USB sockets are far slower than a modern phone or laptop charger.
A USB socket puts a small switched-mode power supply behind the faceplate. That is convenient, and it removes a charger from a socket, but it also means a piece of electronics with a finite life is now buried in your wall, and it is that trade-off rather than the wiring that should decide whether you fit one.

- Decide what you actually want it to charge.Many fixed USB sockets deliver 2.1A or 2.4A on USB-A, which is fine for a bedside phone overnight and slow for anything else. - Restore and check the RCD afterwards.Switch the MCB back on, confirm the socket works, then press the RCD or RCBO test button. A USB module is exactly the sort of thing that adds a small amount of earth leakage, and confirming the protection still functions is worth ten seconds.

- The most useful place for one is a bedside or a hallway table, not a kitchen worktop where the socket is needed for appliances.
- USB modules draw a small standing current even with nothing plugged in — a fraction of a watt each, which is trivial individually and adds up if you fit twelve.
- If the socket is behind furniture and hard to get at, that is an argument against, not for. The module will eventually fail and it will need swapping again.
Common mistakes
- Buying the socket before measuring the back box — Depth is the whole job. A 35mm module in a 25mm box means either crushed conductors or a faceplate standing 10mm proud.
- Expecting a fixed USB socket to fast-charge a laptop — Most do not. Even the good ones top out well below what a dedicated laptop charger delivers, and shared-output sockets halve it again.
- Fitting an unbranded socket from an online marketplace — The module is a mains-powered power supply sitting inside a wall cavity. Counterfeit and non-compliant accessories are a documented problem, and this is not a component to buy on price alone. Look for BS 1363 marking from a supplier you can identify.

Cause: The internal power supply module has failed — Fix: The whole accessory is replaced. This is normal and is the main lifetime argument against fixed USB sockets.
Socket feels warm
Cause: The switched-mode supply dissipates a little heat, but real warmth means load or a poor connection — Fix: Mild warmth at the faceplate is expected on a USB socket in use. Anything more, or any warmth at the mains pins, is treated as the hot-plug problem — isolate and get it checked.
