How do I replace a doorbell transformer?
The three ways a UK doorbell transformer is supplied, which of them is owner-level, how to specify the right replacement, and when a plug-in or wireless answer is the better decision.

Short answer
If it is a plug-in transformer, replacing it is just swapping an appliance. If it is fed from a fused connection unit, it is mains work that needs isolation, proving dead and competence. If it is mounted inside the consumer unit, it is not your job at all. Match the output voltage and the VA rating to whatever the chime or video doorbell requires.
Doorbell transformers fail quietly after ten or twenty years of being energised continuously, and the replacement is genuinely simple — but the mounting decides everything about whether it is your job. The three arrangements are quite different and it is worth identifying yours before ordering anything.

- Identify how the existing one is supplied.Plug-in type into an ordinary socket; hard-wired from a fused connection unit or a junction; or DIN-rail mounted inside the consumer unit. Look, do not open anything.
- Stop immediately if it is inside the consumer unit.A DIN-rail transformer in the board sits beside live busbars. Replacing it is consumer unit work — a qualified electrician, and it is straightforward and quick for them.
- Read the output rating off the old one.Usually marked with one or more output voltages — 4V, 8V and 12V taps are common — and a VA rating such as 8VA or 20VA. Note which terminal the bell wire is actually connected to, because that is the voltage the chime expects.
- Check what the chime or doorbell needs.A mechanical chime typically wants 8V or 12V at modest current. A video doorbell often specifies a minimum, commonly 12V to 24V at 10VA or more, and will behave intermittently on anything less. Buy for the device, not for the old transformer.
- Isolate properly if it is hard-wired.Identify the circuit feeding the fused connection unit, switch that MCB off, lock or tape it, tell the household, and prove dead at the transformer's mains terminals with an approved two-pole voltage indicator using prove-test-prove.
- Photograph before disconnecting.Which cores go to which mains terminals, which bell wire goes to which output tap, and how the earth is terminated. Photographs remove all the guesswork on reassembly.
- Fit the replacement to the same pattern.Mains line, neutral and earth to the marked terminals, earth sleeved, bell wires to the correct output tap, every screw tight and every core tug-tested. Mount it where it is ventilated and accessible, not buried behind insulation.
- Restore and test.Switch the circuit back on, press the bell, and confirm the chime sounds correctly. If the chime is weak, move the bell wire to a higher voltage tap; if it is harsh or buzzes, move it lower.
- Consider the alternatives honestly.A battery wireless doorbell removes the transformer, the wiring and the fault altogether, for less than the cost of an electrician's visit. If the existing wiring is also suspect, that is often the sensible decision rather than a nostalgic one.
Tips
- Transformers are cheap and electrician time is not, so if you are having one out, fit one with headroom on VA in case a video doorbell follows later.
- Label the bell wires before disconnecting. They are usually identical in colour and it matters which tap they land on.
- Mount the transformer somewhere you can reach without a ladder. The next person to need it will thank you.
Common mistakes
- Working on a transformer isolated only by removing the FCU fuse — Removing the fuse breaks the line but leaves the neutral connected and does not prove the terminals dead. Isolate the circuit at the board and prove dead properly.
- Matching the transformer to the old one rather than to the chime — If you are upgrading to a video doorbell, the old rating is very likely inadequate and you will be doing the job twice.
- Mounting it in the loft under insulation — Transformers run warm and are permanently energised. Burying one in insulation shortens its life and hides a mains connection where nobody will find it.
If it doesn't work
New transformer fitted, chime sounds weak
Cause: Bell wire on too low an output tap — Fix: Isolate, move the bell wire to the next tap up, and retest.
Video doorbell keeps dropping offline
Cause: Transformer VA rating too low for the device — Fix: Fit a transformer meeting the manufacturer's stated VA. Undersupply is the classic cause of intermittent video doorbell behaviour.
Transformer hums loudly
Cause: Loose laminations, or an overloaded transformer — Fix: A faint hum is normal. A loud one, or one that is hot, means it is undersized or failing — replace it with a correctly rated unit.
Transformer warm to the touch
Cause: Normal for a small transformer under load, or a sign of overload — Fix: Mildly warm is expected. Hot enough to be uncomfortable means it is overloaded or failing.

Is this notifiable work?
Replacing a like-for-like accessory on an existing circuit in an ordinary location is not notifiable in England and Wales. Anything inside the consumer unit is a different matter entirely and is not owner work.
Can I run a video doorbell off my old bell transformer?
Only if it meets the manufacturer's voltage and VA specification, and most old 8VA bell transformers do not. Check before you buy the doorbell, not after.
Does the transformer need its own fuse?
It needs protection appropriate to its supply — usually a 3A fuse in a fused connection unit, or a suitably rated device in the board. Follow the transformer manufacturer's instruction, and if the supply arrangement is unclear, that is the point at which to ask an electrician.
