How do I repair a broken tent pole?
The splint sleeve every tent bag should contain, how to centre it, and the difference between a field repair and a proper one.

Short answer
Slide the repair sleeve along the pole and centre it over the break so an equal length of sound pole sits inside each end, then tape both ends tightly onto the pole beyond the sleeve. It is a get-you-home repair โ replace the section properly before the next trip.
Tent poles are thin-walled aluminium or fibreglass held in a line by an internal elastic shock cord. They break for two reasons: overloading in wind, and being flicked out to assemble rather than fed through section by section. Both are avoidable, and the repair itself is straightforward once you know the sleeve exists.

Step by step
- Get the tent stable before repairing anything.In wind, take the load off the broken pole โ drop that end, add guy lines, or partly collapse the tent. A broken pole under tension will tear the fabric sleeve it sits in.
- Find the repair sleeve.Most tents come with a short tube of slightly larger diameter, often taped inside the pole bag and never noticed. That is what it is for.
- Slide the sleeve along the pole to the break.It has to travel from one end of the section, which is why it will not fit over a joint โ this is normal. Work it along until it reaches the break.
- Centre it precisely over the break.Equal lengths of sound pole inside the sleeve on each side. A sleeve sitting mostly on one side of the break has very little grip on the other, and it will fail there.
- Tape both ends firmly.Wind strong fabric tape tightly round each end of the sleeve and onto the pole beyond it. Thin clear tape does not have the strength; a strong cloth or repair tape does.
- Improvise if there is no sleeve.A tent peg, a stick or a section of another pole taped tightly alongside the break works. Expect it to be stiff at the splint, which concentrates the bending load just beyond it, so it often breaks again a few centimetres along.
- Check the fabric sleeve the pole runs in.A splintered fibreglass pole cuts fabric. Look for damage to the pole sleeve and tape it if needed, and file or tape any sharp edges on the pole.
- Take the tension off that pole for the rest of the trip.Slacken guys slightly on that side and avoid pitching in exposed places. A splinted pole is much weaker than the original.
- Order a replacement section afterwards.Pole sections are sold by diameter and length by tent manufacturers and pole specialists. Replacing one section restores the pole properly.
- Rethread the shock cord if it is baggy.A pole that is hard to assemble and keeps falling apart usually has a perished elastic cord rather than a pole fault. Cord is cheap, and rethreading it โ tying a knot at each end over a small toggle โ restores the pole to new.
- Assemble poles properly in future.Feed each section into the next by hand from the middle outwards, rather than shaking the pole out and letting the sections snap together. The impact of a section landing hard is what chips and cracks the ends.
Tips
- Check the repair sleeve is still in the bag before every trip. It is the single most useful item in there.
- Carry a few metres of strong fabric tape wound round a pole section or a water bottle rather than the whole roll.
- Fibreglass poles splinter and give warning as they age; replace a pole that is shedding fibres before it fails.
Common mistakes
- Taping the sleeve off-centre โ The joint is only as strong as the shorter overlap. A sleeve sitting mostly on one side of the break has almost no purchase on the other and pulls off under load.
- Shaking poles out to assemble them โ The sections fly together under the elastic and hit hard, which chips the ferrules and cracks the thin tube ends. It is the most common cause of pole failure and it is entirely avoidable.
If it doesn't work
Sleeve will not slide over a joint
Cause: It is designed to fit over the plain tube only โ Fix: Approach from the correct end of the section so it does not have to pass a ferrule.
Splinted pole broke again just past the splint
Cause: Stiff splint concentrating bending load at its end โ Fix: Use a longer sleeve, taper the tape at the ends, and reduce tension on that side of the tent.
Pole sections keep falling apart
Cause: Perished shock cord โ Fix: Replace the cord โ it is inexpensive and it is a twenty-minute job at home.
Fibreglass pole is splintering along its length
Cause: Age and UV degradation โ Fix: Replace it. Splinters cut fabric and hands and the pole is at the end of its life.
Questions people ask
Can I just tape the break without a sleeve?
Tape alone has almost no bending stiffness, so the pole will fold at the same point immediately. It needs something rigid bridging the break โ a sleeve, a peg or a stick โ and the tape only holds that in place.
Are aluminium or fibreglass poles better?
Aluminium is lighter, stronger for its weight, and bends before it breaks, which usually gives you a usable pole. Fibreglass is cheaper and heavier and tends to splinter suddenly. Most tents worth repairing have aluminium poles.
