Why are my tiles cloudy after grouting, and how do I get it off?

The thin cement film left behind after grouting, why it gets harder to remove by the day, and the sequence that takes it off without damaging the tile or the joints.

Short answer

It is grout haze: a microscopically thin cement film left on the tile when the wash water dried on it. Within a day or two, warm water and a scouring pad take it off. After that it needs a proprietary haze remover, used with the joints wetted first, and on stone you need a non-acidic product.

Almost everyone gets some grout haze — it is what happens when cement-laden water dries on a tile face rather than being removed. The reason it becomes a problem is time: fresh, it wipes off; a fortnight later it is a hardened cement deposit that has to be dissolved.

Safety

Acidic haze removers burn skin and eyes and give off fumes: gloves, eye protection and ventilation, and never mix them with anything else. They also etch natural stone, marble and some polished porcelain permanently — test on a spare tile before touching the floor.

Step by step

  1. Deal with it as soon as the grout has firmed, not days later.The polish-off with a dry cloth once the joints have set is a normal part of grouting and it removes most haze at almost no effort.
  2. Try warm water and a damp microfibre first.For anything recent this is often enough. Change the water frequently — a dirty bucket puts the haze straight back.
  3. Move up to a white non-scratch pad, used damp.Work over a small area at a time and dry it immediately, so the dissolved film is lifted off rather than being spread and left to dry again.
  4. If that fails, wet the joints thoroughly before using any chemical.Saturating the grout first stops an acidic cleaner attacking the joints as well as the haze. It is the step people miss and it is why grout sometimes ends up eroded around the edges.
  5. Test the haze remover on a spare tile or a hidden corner.Acidic products etch limestone, marble, travertine and some polished surfaces irreversibly. If the tile is natural stone, use a product specifically labelled for stone.
  6. Apply, leave for the stated dwell time, agitate, then rinse thoroughly.Rinse means rinse — with clean water, several times, changing the water. Residue left on the tile attracts dirt and can leave its own film.
  7. Dry the surface fully and look at it in raking light.Haze is often invisible under a wet surface and obvious once dry. A torch held low across the floor shows what is left.
  8. Repeat rather than escalating strength.Two gentle passes are safer than one aggressive one, particularly on stone and on unglazed porcelain where the surface is porous.
  9. Seal afterwards if the tile or grout needs it.Only once fully clean and dry — sealing over haze locks it in permanently.

Tips

  • Textured and anti-slip tiles hold haze in their texture and are far harder to clean. On those, be much more careful during the wash-off stage than you think you need to be.
  • Unglazed porcelain and stone can absorb the haze rather than just carrying it. Pre-sealing before grouting is the standard prevention on those tiles.
  • Two buckets, always: one for rinsing the sponge and one of clean water for the final wipe.
  • If the whole floor looks slightly dull rather than filmy, check you have not etched it with an over-strong acidic cleaner — that is a different and permanent problem.

Common mistakes

  • Using an acidic cleaner on stone — Limestone, marble and travertine are calcium carbonate and dissolve in acid. The result is an etched, dull patch that no amount of cleaning restores and that can only be dealt with by refinishing the stone.
  • Using acid on dry grout joints — The acid attacks the cement in the joints as readily as the cement in the haze. Wetting the joints first fills them with water so the cleaner works on the surface film instead of eroding the joints.
  • Letting the wash water dry on the tiles during grouting — This is where the haze comes from in the first place. Each time slurry-laden water dries on the face it leaves another film, and each film is harder to remove than the last.

If it doesn't work

Film returns every time it dries

Cause: Being redistributed rather than removed — dirty water — Fix: Change water constantly, work in small areas, and dry each area immediately with a clean cloth before moving on.

Haze in the texture of an anti-slip tile

Cause: Film trapped in the surface profile — Fix: A haze remover with dwell time and a stiff nylon brush worked in both directions, then thorough rinsing. Expect several passes.

Grout joints eroded and pitted after cleaning

Cause: Acidic cleaner used on dry joints — Fix: Rake out and regrout the damaged joints. Wet the joints first next time, or use a non-acidic product.

Questions people ask

Will it wear off on its own?

On a floor, some of it eventually will, unevenly, which looks worse than the original haze. It is not worth waiting for — and it gets harder to remove the longer it sits.

Can I use vinegar?

It is a weak acid, so it carries the same risk to stone and to grout joints as any acid, with much less effectiveness than a product designed for the job. On glazed ceramic it sometimes works on light haze; on stone, do not.

How do I avoid it next time?

Wash off with a barely damp sponge rather than a wet one, change the water constantly, wipe diagonally across joints, and do the final dry polish with a clean cloth once the joints have firmed. On porous tiles, seal before grouting.
