How do I get black bitumen adhesive off a floor?

Short answer

Do not touch it until it is identified. Have a sample analysed by an accredited laboratory. If it is clear, bitumen comes off with a mechanical scraper and patience, or is softened with a purpose-made adhesive remover — never with heat that fills a room with fumes. If it contains asbestos, stop, and either get it removed by a licensed contractor or leave it sealed and build over it.

Under old parquet, thermoplastic tiles and vinyl tiles there is very often a hard black adhesive. It is a nuisance to remove and it is a genuine hazard to guess about, because the same era that used bitumen adhesives also used asbestos in flooring products. The order of operations here is not negotiable: identify, then decide, then act.

Black bitumen flooring adhesive laid from roughly the 1950s to the 1980s can contain asbestos, and so can the old vinyl or thermoplastic tiles commonly bedded in it. Sanding, grinding, dry scraping or breaking it up releases fibres, and that is the one thing you must not do to an unidentified black adhesive. Get a sample analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory before you disturb it. If it is asbestos-containing, removal is licensed or notifiable work depending on the material and is not a DIY job — leaving it undisturbed and encapsulating over it is often the correct and lawful answer.

Step by step

  1. Stop and look at the age and the material.Hard, black, brittle, often shiny, and under floor tiles or parquet in a building from the 1950s to the 1980s. That combination is exactly the profile that warrants testing.
  2. Get it tested before you disturb it.Take a small sample by the method the laboratory specifies — usually damp, sealed in a bag, with minimal disturbance — or have a surveyor take it. UKAS-accredited analysis is inexpensive relative to the cost of getting this wrong.
  3. If it contains asbestos, change plan entirely.Do not remove it yourself. Depending on the material and its condition, removal may be licensed work or notifiable non-licensed work. The alternative that is frequently the right answer is to leave it undisturbed, seal it, and build the new floor over the top.
  4. If it is clear, choose a method that does not create dust.For confirmed non-asbestos bitumen: a long-handled floor scraper with a sharp blade removes the bulk mechanically. A purpose-made adhesive or bitumen remover softens what is left. Neither should be replaced by a grinder or a sander.
  5. Work in sections and keep the residue contained.Scrape a manageable area, bag the debris as you go, and keep the room ventilated. Bitumen softens with warmth, so work in a heated room rather than applying heat directly.
  6. Do not use a heat gun or a blowtorch.Bitumen fumes are unpleasant and the material can ignite. Chemical softening and mechanical scraping are the accepted domestic routes.
  7. Accept that a residue will remain.Bitumen has usually soaked into the surface of the slab and you will not get a chemically clean floor. That is normal and it is why the next step exists.
  8. Prime and encapsulate the residue rather than chasing it.Once the bulk is off, the standard approach is a primer specifically stated by its manufacturer to work over bitumen residue, followed by a levelling compound. Ordinary primers and compounds can be attacked by residual bitumen or fail to bond, and some plasticisers migrate into new vinyl and discolour it.
  9. Check compatibility with what is going on top.Tell the flooring supplier there is bitumen residue below. Some adhesives, some levelling compounds and some vinyl products react badly to it, and the manufacturer's technical line will state what is acceptable.

Alternatives

  • Encapsulate and build over: Prime with a bitumen-tolerant primer and cover with levelling compound, or lay a plywood overlay or a floating floor over the top. Usually cheaper, always safer, and the correct answer where asbestos is confirmed and the material is sound.
  • Licensed asbestos removal: Where the material is asbestos-containing and genuinely must go — for example because the slab has to be dug out or the level cannot be raised. Priced accordingly and documented, which matters at sale.
  • Mechanical scraping only: For confirmed clear bitumen: a sharp floor scraper and time. Slow, dusty only in the sense of debris rather than fine dust, and effective at removing the bulk.
  • Chemical softening: Purpose-made bitumen removers soften the residue so it can be scraped. Effective, messy, and requires proper ventilation and full removal of the softened material before anything is laid.
